Does anyone have experience with snow chains (rubber type)?
In Japan, snow chains are really popular coz they just can't drive in snow.
Personally, I don't have a problem driving in snow (and I live in MI) except if it's too deep, I can't move, nor can I climb up steep driveways, etc. I don't plan on getting a 4x4 anytime soon.
I could probably get a decent set of rubber snow chains for around $100 to $150 here in Japan, and only plan on putting it on when I absolutely need it. You don't need to lift the wheel to put it on, that's the nice part.
Anyone who's used snow chains, any comments? Personally, I think they have an advantage over snow tires because of their "webbing"
I appreciate all comments!

I have used only metal ones of the quick install type where you don't have the lift the car. Basically you just roll over it. I haven't used any on my Max, and don't plan to because:
A) I live in Southern California.
B) Just not enough clearance between the wheel well and the tire. I would be afraid of scratching up my paint.
And your driving ability is not really a good indication to go by if you are deciding on whether to buy snow chains or not. The reason a majority of people use them is because it just provides much better traction for handling and stopping.
Let me know when you are in the Southern California mountains on a snow day so I can know to stay off that mountain. Since you have such a "great" driving ability you won't need chains.

I'm not here to say that my driving ability lets me excel in winter driving.
The majority of my commute is highway driving and driving snow chains on at high speeds is a definite no-no. If I were driving low speeds along a mountain, I would probably use a set of snow chains full-time. I was only trying to get people's opinion to see if having a set of snow chains would be a good emergency tool to use.
Thanks for your comments (and 'praises'), hopefully I can hear more feedback from others who have used snow chains.
