You have to take the guage cluster out, then replace the bulb that way. There's really no simple way to do it.

what yr??

ok my max is 5th gen.. what i need to do. remove two screws on the top of the guage. lower the steering wheel for better access. use a flat head screw driver, preferably a putty knife to pull the panel off. insert it into the crack on th ebottom of the dash peice. pry the right side out. then the left. the whole thing isnow loose. unplug all wires from the dash trim. remove completely. there are i think 4 screws that hold the guage cluster down.. remove thoese. 2 on top 2 on bottom. slide it up and out.. then unplug all the wires back there. the bulbs are located behind a plug light thing. twist and pull change and do the intall.. everything in reverse..

the above are just helpful hint for your project. i am in no way liable for a screw up.. g'luck have fun..

I did it on mine. was SOOO easy

I used the instructions on my manual... I will scan and post.

it was a matter of a few screws, removing buttons and caps, tilting the wheel down, and prying very carefully...

my panel lights up green (though the bulbs say blue on the package) but they now match the clock exactly, there are five bulbs all the same that run across the whole thing, I was gonna try red ones on the ends and see how it mixes.
I was inspired by the jetta display.. they look neat.

ok,...

no need to scan

1)remove steering column covers ( screws bellow )
2)remove two screws at the top of the instrument cluster bezel.
3)pull out the bezel to release clips.
( you may want to unclip all the buttons (cruise, dim switch) careful, they are easy to pull out but also ease to scratch and damage)

once you got that out, you will be able to see all the screws that hold the dials in place... unscrew them.

pull the whole thing out, it will be real trick to manouver around the steering wheel, but i guess if you wanted to youcould remove this too, i didn't have to.

the bulbs you wanna use are the same type that are on your door lights when you open the driver door passenger door

1997 Maxima Instrument panel bulbs

Does anyone know what kind of bulbs to use for the instrument panel for a 1997 Max? What colors do they come in?

97 MAX SE Instrument Light replacement

Tboogie,
I've got a 97 MAX SE. Just got some hyperwhites from AIE for the corners. I saw a post about changing the lights in the instrument cluster. The guy I talked to got his from AIE, xenons 194s. A total of 5 will do it, AIE sells them in pairs so you've got a spare or if you have an auto you can use one there [my SE is a 5spd ]. Haven't done the installation but the description sounds easy. Two screws above the instrument cluster and then pull out gently, two more screws and then plug and play so to speak. The guy I talked to obviously got "super whites", no color. He says that it looks very Lexus like. I hadn't thought of changing the color like some. Think I'll stay with white. Haven't done it yet but soon.
