Lightweight front wheels for 1/4 track?

I am getting some super sweet 18's for my ride this summer.
Problem is they weigh 24lbs, not ideal for tracking.
I am considering purchasing 2 superlight 16's for the front (drive) wheels, but am not sure if this is a wise idea.
Will I need to replace all 4 wheels to get the benefits of reduced rotational mass?
Any oppinions/comments would be appreciated.
Thanx

yeah, if you are serious about racing, i'd pick up some smaller wheels, 18's will kill your time. in fact, i'd get 15 x 7 wheels instead of 16in wheels. and you only need a pair of wheels, not all 4. rotational mass only really applies to your drive wheels.

I really didn't feel much of a difference in acceleration when i got my subzeros, do you think they'd really affect my times that much compared to stock wheels?

Well, if you are going to the 1/4 mile track, then you porbably want some 15 inch wheels. If you are going to use slicks in hte future, or even use drag radials, there are MANY MORE selections of slicks and radials for the 15 inch wheel. I have the 15x7 Kosei K1 rims from www.tirerack.com . They were $109.00 a piece and only weigh in at about 13 pounds. Good luck.

educate me then... i was always lead to believe that rotational mass was only noticable in the drive wheels and that the non drive wheels would only be affected by the actual weight lost... i.e same as removing weight anywhere else in your car.

If you want to run slicks then 15" is your Choice. Like Ramius said there almost NO sizes other than 15" for slicks. There are 16" just not the height you would want.

All rotational mass is important and weight is more important on the rear of a front wheel drive than the front. If you are trying to reduce weight start and the rear first and work forward. Weight on the rear is absolutely useless. Weight on the front at least helps traction.

IF you are planning on 16" superlights, plan on tires before you buy them.

I just drove to Detroit last week to buy 4 Millenia 15x6 wheels that weigh 11.5 lbs but they are really too small for my slicks which I am going to try anyway. If they don't work out I will buy the 15x7 or 15x6.5's.

You can get 15x6.5" Rota's which only weigh 12lbs for the same price or less than the K1's that is my second choice.

Don't go to the track they are all a bunch of wossies.

PS I also am embarassed I forget your name Kink, but I do remember you from the Dyno day.

While this is being discussed, I plan on getting some 19" Centerline RPMs, which weigh 15 pounds each. How much of a benefit would these be over my stock 16s? Would getting like 16-17s that are lighter by only a couple pounds make a big difference?

You got it Jime- Rota slipstream (15x6.5-12lbs/16x7-13.5lbs).
- 5Zigen FN-01R (15x7-10.6lbs/16x7-11.7lbs/17x7.5- 13.5lbs).
I dont'know much about drag radials and didn't realize 15's are what I needed. If that's the case do you know what offset is right for me (or how to calculate proper offset)?
-And if you meant the 18's, i'm hooking up with some HP EVO's 18x8 from Henrik (Maxed Up), those look sweet.
-So I might as well get all 4 wheels then?
Thanx

I assumed you meant slicks not D/R's so forget about absolute necessity for the 15's, even though they would be lighter. Slicks are almost exclusively 15".

Offset for the wheels should in the 35-40 range (I think) if I remember correctly mine are 38.

Not sure if you have an auto or 5 speed, if you are auto I would run the smallest dia tire you can get ie 22", because it helps considerably in lowering your overall gear ratio and 1/4 mile times. In a 5 speed they would probably give you traction problems.

PS Not only is StevTec correct about the rotational mass for the rear wheels but 1 lb rotational is equal to 3 lbs stationary so if you remove 20 lbs or instance off your rear wheel/tire combo its the equivalent of removing 60 lbs non rotational.

What's up Jime?
My names Drew, I'm the fool with the insanely huge exhaust system (got one ticket already). My car is 5 speed.
Thanks for the advice guys.
It seems like 15's might be a better choice after all.
5-Zigen FN-01R 5x114.3- 10.6 lbs - 175$
Rota Slipstream 15x6.5 5x114.3- 12lbs - 115$
Might as well go for broke and get a full set then eh?
Besides what the hell am I going to do with 2 wheels anyways?

Drew I may have to buy two more, probably the Rota's, haven't had good luck trying to get my slicks mounted on the 6" Millenia wheels, just too narrow. I love the light weight and the price was good but I will use them for the rear for sure.

BTW where did you see the Rota's for $115? Or is that $US, best I have found them here is around $180 ea Cdn which is pretty close to the same price.

PS Ok I remember the exhaust for sure.

Nice, I'd rather buy Canadian.
We should get a "Group deal"?
What kind of tires should i put on these and what is the max size that will fit?

Sorry guys, I know this is the wrong place to put this, but I have two Kosei K1 wheels for sale. 15x7 good condition, no tires. I was planning on using them with drag radials but I decided against that last year.

Looking for $150 plus ship, email me at infinite97@attbi.com and we can work something out.

I also have 16x8 k1's for 400 shipped.

Thanks

What would be the best slick tire size to go with 15x7 Kosei's?

Depends on auto or stick. I race auto only and the best is 22x8x15. For a stick I would go larger in the 24-26 range depending on HP. Higher HP larger dia. To small a dia results in negative traction.

For an auto with basic bolt-ons and maybe a 75 shot in the future, what would you recommend, 22x8x15?

What's negative traction?

And what's the best place to buy slicks?

Thanks

Can't beat 22x8x15's M/T's for auto's of any HP.

Negative traction, I just meant no traction, mega wheelspin.

I would just do a search for M/T drag slicks. I got mine in Canada.

M&H's are good too, I just haven't tried them, still on my first set.
