I was browsing forums on subject of engine oil and noticed that a lot of people put 5-30 oil int their cars. I always used 10-40 in mine. I thought 5-30 is for cold weather use.
What's the difference?

Use what the manual recommends...5w30 or 10w30. 10w40 won't ruin your engine, but will probably hurt fuel economy a little bit.

It was only back in the day when cars used 10w40. In fact, my 83 VQ Quantum uses 20w50 motor oil! But new cars function well with thinner oil due to lower friction in modern engines (Maxima has all sorts of friction reducing technologies like molybdenum piston rings or something like that).
