Signs of clutch slipping?

Hey guys, I want to know what happens when your clutch slips? Because lately (meaning the last 2 days), it has been harder and jerkier to start in 1st, and 1st-2nd shifts are always very jerky..... even from 2nd-3rd. Also, ya know when you are in a race and your dash shakes violently? I have started getting that a lot now..... but much less severe, it happens on a miniature scale, even going into 2nd gear. Is my clutch slipping? How long will it be before I need a new clutch, or do I need to get one immediately? I have 79k on my car. Please help me out, thanks a lot!

Shawn

You have clutch chatter.

That could be caused by contamination, glazing of your clutch disk or a warped flywheel.

It's time to service your clutch.

Service means take it out and inspect it to see what's wrong. With 79K on your car, you put a new one back in as long as everything else is OK. Clutch chatter could be caused by oil leaking from your rear main seal onto the clutch disk. Replace the seal if thats the case before you put the new clutch in. If you flywheel is glazed, burnt or warped, have it resurfaced.

clutch replacement typically runs 250-350$ for labor only. Parts will cost you around 200-250$

I get clutch chatter as well.

If your clutch was slipping, you'd literally feel it slip. Sure way to test it is to put the car in 5th gen while cruising at like 40 and give it gas, if the RPMs go up but the car is not gaining speed, then you know it's not well.

Mine does not slip, but it chatters like crazy, my pedal is very stiff and it's just feeling rough overall.. From what I understand the pressure plate and/or the throwout bearing may be causing this. Either way, to change it, you have to remove everything, so might as well replace everything while you're in there.

ok the weirdest thing happened.... i was getting this clutch chatter yesterday and this morning.... but when i got in my car after school today, everything was FINE... even better than fine..... shifting as smoother than ever before and my engine "hiccups" were drastically minimized in 1st and 2nd...... i have no idea how this could have happened..... i mean it is good and all, but i am just puzzled.

should i still take it to be checked out?

the chatter may come back. the clutch plate and flywheel contact 'dynamic' may have found a temporary sweet spot. who knows. i'd bet it will be back. if something is worn, it will not unwear itself. maybe the car has arthritis. try giving it some excedrin.

Clutch disc, Pressure plate, throw out bearing, pilot shaft bearing. If you are in there, it's a perfet time to upgrade that boulder of a flywheel with a nice lightweight one.

car studders and shakes like a b-tch as the clutch begins to grab. depends how bad it is on your car if you even have it at all.. but mine makes the care almost undrivable until it's fully warmed up.

right. mine is getting to be that way as well. the question is this >>> which hi-performance clutch is a great choice for the 3rd gen? i have heard mixed stories on these forums, btw. from some research, i have steered away from ATC, as that was once a possibility. now i am seriously considering Exedy. another question arises as well >>> what type of clutch disc is best? i am looking at the kind with the "pucks." as far as i know, the kind with the tri-puck design is nearly only for race applications and would wear out too soon for street use. whether this is true or not is beyond me at this point. i'm no clutch expert.

how much does a new OEM clutch cost? And how much would it cost to have the clutch installed, and the flywheel resurfaced?

OEM clutch assembly can be had for around 200$ last time i checked. Look at courtesyparts.com.

as far the intallation.. it was mentioned earlier in this thread. 250-350$ for the labor, which my guess includes the flywheel resurfacing.

I'm getting ready to do mine in a couple of weeks. Freakin car is barely driveable. Clutch doesn't slip but it is very rough.
