I need info on how to replace a front wheel bearing

Hey guy's, my front right wheel bearing failed on me about 4 months back (right after the tranny replacememnt). I finaly had it repaired last week. Well what do you know, my front left wheel bearing is now completly shot. I paid a pretty penny on the front right bearing replacment and since now the other one needs to be replaced I want to do it my self.

Now the question is, how is this done exactly? Can someone with experience explain it to me? I have the 2002 ESM and a 95+ Haynes manual but neither of them really gives me the info I need. I am going to rent a bearing compressor today since I know I will need that. I allready have a ball joint tool.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Ethan

Long time no see!

I was told that bearings should last a long time unless you have alignment issues but maybe the tech was wrong.

How do you know you need new bearings? I was thinking about changin mine.

It has been a while

I knew the front right one was bad when I was hearing a whirling noise, then later a thumping noise (that thumped with the wheel rotating). The wheel moved back and forth about a half inch too. Also the hub bolt kept going finger tight leaving just the pin to hold the wheel together.

The front right one started making a screeching noise about 5 days ago followed by a steering wheel vibration. Then last night something went terribly wrong with it and now the wheel is making this insane thumping noise. I almost had the car towed home last night but I found that under acceleration the thumping would go away and also under hard braking. So you can only imagine what I did on my comute home last night, lol. I would go from 30-70 in 6th gear and then I would slam the brakes and then do it all over again, and again..

Motorvate link and instructions helped but acquiring the use of a kit of bearing presses is a definite asset...the whole bolt and washer deal was not enough for me...

contact the local auto parts store for the complete bearing press kit...see if they can loan it to you if you leave a deposit...it will save you a lot of stress .. oh and get a good table mounted vice.
