Visited a Nissan Dealer

I went basically to check out the 04 maxima's for myself and ask about timing advance.

well, first i get a sales guy and we're talking about maxima's, he tries telling me all the following things:

02-03 max has 245 hp
04 has 275 hp
04 max's are selling faster than any other car on the lot
they don't make them in manuals
02 maximas are still selling for 30k
the 350z is a 12.7 quarter second car
that same 350z is faster than a 911 carrera
b/c that carrera only runs a 14.8
the new maxima isn't based on the new altima

after awhile, it was hard not to laugh, but i did manage a test drive - and i was very impressed. very tight strong car that felt solid but very nimble. good engine too.

but, back to my point, then i go insiode to ask about timing advancing my 2k1 - no one has heard of it. no one. i describve it, tell them they just have to use a consult-2 and it stays within factory specs. but then this guy looks at me and says, we can't change factory settings or else we get a $10,000 fine from Nissan. I smiled and walked out.

I can't believe the incompetency of some dealerships. but then, this is why i didn't buy my car from there...

Never, ever buy from St. Charles Nissan in Missouri

Well, it's not funny because many of us learned that stuff after we dropped 20 grand. There should never be any question, if you have the coyne, buy a German car. Unfortunately most entry-level Germans cost as much as a loaded 2k4 Maxima. Unless you're 45-55 yrs old +, I can see no reason to buy any Nissan product except the 350Z. There's so much more out there, it's not 1994 anymore.

It's not really incompetence, because I highly doubt a Nissan salesman makes enough to feed himself or a family. He probably works there to use the phone.

well 2k2-k3 really do have about 245hp at the crank. they advertised 255 but look at the dynos. the torque is higher than advertised though. as far as the timing, the best and most likely only to get it done at the dealer is to know a tech.

Doesn't it make you feel good that you can't go to the dealerships and ask them about what they should know?

autos are very tough to advance time, because it's controlled by the ecu, i know 3rd gen manuals just have to turn something on the engine very slightly to advance time, but auto's would have to get the ecu reprogrammed, and i'm sure all 4th and 5th gens advanced timing is now controlled by the ecu......

i dont know about 4ths, but advancing the timing on 5ths is the same for manual or auto courtesy of the consult 2.

Umm - only if you consider hooking up a connector to the ECU and punching a few buttons to be "hard"... Maybe you meant hard for an owner by himself without going to the dealer?

on 5th gen, just take the connector off the consult 2 and plug it in under the steering wheel. its kind of a pyramid shaped connector.
