you're kidding right??
it is what keep your rpm from going too high. it basically cut the fuel off so you motor wont rev any higher than it should.

ic can you program them to rev to a certain limit the only reason im asking one of my friends car never goes over 4000 rpm and he was like i think it could be the rev limiter but he didnt know what it was either so you think it could be

it should go past 4000rpm unless it is a truck.
a rev limiter wouldnt do that. there is something else wrong. is it throwing any codes?

Yeah I rented a car from Avis once.. It was speed limited to about 110 and rev limited. It was torture driving that car for 1 week.

But the neutral bombs were fun

Autos will limit revs to 4k in P or N. My old Taurus did that - so does my wife's Grand Prix.

The rev limit when you're in gear depends on the engine. Pushrods limit out at 5.5-6k. OHC/DOHC more like 6.5-7k. Honda S2000 like 9k or something... The SHO has a rev limit of like 6.5 but that's to protect the accesories from being overdriven. They'll use a combination of UDP plus higher idle plus raised limiter to 7.5k to produce tons more power without wrecking the accessories.

The 4k rev limiter on autos only works if you are at a stop...my 99 Monte Carlo does that. If I'm stopped, I can't rev it above 4k in neutral, but if I am rolling, I can pop it in Neutral and rev it to redline.

i also drove a saturn from enterprise rent a car which had a rev limiter of like 4k or 4.5k

There is a way to get around it, i know a few people that have cut the rev limiter off on their maxima's. There should be ways to do it on other cars, just gotta ask around....
