Do I need a thermostat valve for a small engine oil cooler?

I recently bought an engine oil cooler from ebay. It is only 10 rolls cooler. Its length is 30cm, 10cm in height and thickness is 5cm. I understand that oil needs to be within a temp. range for it to protect the engine properly. With a large cooler, it might take a long time to bring up the temperature. Therefore, a thermostat valve is used and will open fully when the oil reach, say, 180F.

However, for a small cooler like mine. Is a thermo valve really necessary?

also...I want to flush the cooler before I install it. What chemical can I flush it with? It is an aluminum cooler.

thx

Since the cooler is small and you don't experience very cold weather you should be able to get away without a thermostat, although one would be preferred. To flush it I would use one of the water based carb, injector or brake cleaners followed by soapy water, water then air.

thx guys for the reply I was thiking about this question myself too. I live in cali so the weather is pretty stable here. (85f is considered "hot" to me, and 47F is pretty damned "cold") Another thing that I have to consider is the driving distance. I do long distance driving three times a week and I only drive 10 miles max on the rest of the week. That might not be good for having an oil cooler because of too much short distance driving (even though I dont boost when driving short distance.)

Summer is coming soon! so probably I will not use a thermostat sandwich adapter for now. But it will be good to have one in the winter.

the seller told me that the kit was never used....but it is old though. I found a lot of deposit on the fittings

thx for the help again!
