Several years ago I owned a 5spd car and after doing one of my many clutch jobs on this car I decided to use synthetic gear oil. Now I always change the gear oil after every clutch job because it's a simple drain and fill. If I remember correctly it was 80W oil, but I cant't really remember which brand oil. The last clutch job the car had well over 150K and within a month the gear box went out. I wrote the cause of the failure to the synthetic oil, but it could have been normal wear and tear. So here's my dilemma, I'll be doing a minor service to my auto which involves dropping the VB and I'm considering using synthetic ATF. My car has over 97K and I'm concern about the ill effect of using such fluid. This is were you place your opinion, later.

When was the last time you had a tranny flush? If you never had one, just add regular ATF. I wouldn't switch to synthetic ATF. I wouldn't even do a flush on a high mileage unless the ATF looks brown and smell burnt. Once it's brown, the damage has already been done. Might as well flush it and hopefully get little more out the tranny.

I don't know about 3rd gen, but on 4th the operating

temperture is between 122 - 176 F. When ever the tranny fluid temp reach over 176F, your ATF's useful life just got cut in half. I have a tranny temp gauge and I keep an eye on it. I never push the car when the ATF temp reach over 176. Once in awhile during really hot summer long stop and go traffic. The ATF temp will get up that high. My tranny cooler really helps. Whenever the car is moving, it will drop the temp by aleast 20 F.

1)I drain and fill every 30K with regular ATF

2)I have never did a complete flush.
3)I'm having no tranny problems i.e. burn fluid, slippage, etc.
4)I already have a tranny cooler
Just trying to figure out if it's worth the money. Since the search feature is now at the beginning at each forum (which I did not notice before I posted my question) I did a search on this isssue and read a few post of those going to Jiffy Lube for a complete synthetic flush for about $200

Re: 1)I drain and fill every 30K with regular ATF

complete synthetic flush might not be that expensive. Here's the cost. Redline D4 ATF are $7 a qt. You need aleast 10, but might want to get 14 because most shops like to run the machine with 14. The flush service I got was around $50 since I told them I was using my own ATF. They took off like $10. If your tranny is in good shape, I would get your new VB on. Fill it with regular ATF and take it to a shop to get a synthetic flush. You will be good to go for a long time.
