Removing bumper (the metal part) good idea or bad idea?

I see people remove their front bumper to put in a intercooler. Now to me this seems like a no no, but only in a crash. If you don't have the bumper I would expect more damage. What's the 5 mph bumper anyway? I thought it was the styrafoam between the cover and bumper. Anyway my point is how much more damage would you and your car sustane (without the metal bumper) in an accedent, and wouldn't it be illigal?

good question. a bumper may be considered a safety feature and removing it would cause legality issues for road driven cars...i await responses, but doubt an intercooler will be anywhere in my near future

what does everyone think?

i agree, it should be illegal. What happens to an intercooler in action when pierced to cause a tight hole? thats the bigger concern along with the piping if the intercooler is hit in a way where its forced to move a descent distance? piping is through engine bay to the back pulling ...who knows what it would do...
