Sure this gets a million times

First post!

Anyways I'm looking to get rid of my car come December and I've been doing some research as to possible cars to buy. I'll have a little over 10K to work with and the 4th/5th gen Maxima's definately seem nice. I'm looking for something that's at least as fast as what I have now and is cheaper on insurance, more practical, and doesn't break down as much.

Which years are best and what should I look for in a Max? What are some common problems with this vehicle. As of now I'm looking at a 2000 SE 5-speed. I still have a couple of months to decide but maybe you guys could help give me some more input. Thanks.

Any manual maxima from 95 up can run at or slightly better than 15.21 in the 1/4. With a few mods, you are in the 14s pretty easy. Hell even a 92-94SE 5-sp w/ minor mods will hit a high 14.

I'd say get a 4th Gen if you want the overall combined reliability and lower insurance. Plus, if you're in to modding (and even if you aren't, you soon will be), the 4th Gen has a plethora of performance parts available to it...

Camaro V6's run low 15s?? I thought they were alot slower.

A stock 5speed 95-96 with a good driver should be able to match your Camaro. Add some mods and you got a quick reliable car , that could handle with some suspension mods.

Most people do. Just intake/exhaust...nothing special.

BTW my original question hasn't been answered yet. I'll probably get a 4th gen due to it being older/cheaper. How is their reliability? What are some usual problems with them? What's the difference between the SE, GXE, and GLE? What year is the quickest/best out of the 4th gens?

Thanks.

The differences between the GXE SE AND GLE are listed in the FAQ, there are lots. Basically a stripped 95 GXE 5speed will be the lightest an quickest of the group.

Maximas are rather reliable, some people on the board are past 300k with their 4th gens, and a good handful are past the 200k mark, as long as you maintain it, you should be fine. People have problems with the tranny going out if there is alot of strain on it (ie: constant hard driving, too much HP for the tranny, etc etc).
