Anyone else slowing down on their cruising speeds on the interstate to save gas?

My commute is 45 miles each way. The last 2 days I've been driving about 72 - 75 to save on fuel. My usual speeds for the last 7 months were about 80 - 90 mph and I would eat a 1/4 tank per day. Now I eat an eighth which is decend. I need to replace or clean my rear o2 sensor so that should give me better mileage later.

Anyone else slowing down?

I'm slowing down, but it's only because I can't afford to have those guys with the big flashy lights follow me everywhere.

I never noticed a big enough difference between 70 and 80 to bother slowing down (this was when I drove 60 miles each way to work). No my commute is like 5 miles, so I don't have those problems. A tank of gas last me like 2 and a half weeks.

I need to keep that into consideration too. I have a Class B CDL with air brakes and I just found out that no matter what vehicle you're driving, if you get pulled over, it goes against your CDL.

EJJ: My prior job was 2 miles away but I moved out to the woods of MA. Everything is cheaper out there so it's a give and take situation.

I can't resist the urge to go faster, especially on the freeway I open up. Of course, my friends Passport 8500 does give me that false sense of security too

Yup... don't forget about the higher insurance rates too.. that's worth another couple hundred a year..
plus that time when you're trying to job that requires a clean driving record because part of the job will be driving a company vehicle loaded with >$500k in company-owned test equipment to a job site...

As for the actual mileage differences, I've found I get better mileage at the higher speeds.. 80-85 is about the best I get.. 85-95 is still pretty good.. better mileage than I get at 65. strange.

VE Powah! LOL

I can't go much over 65 on my commute(40 miles ROUND trip) but I have to climb in elevation from 5590' to 7400' in about 1 mile length, and that hill usually doesnt like to save me gas. But I travel every other wekend and usually would go 85-90, but now I keep it @ 77-82, so YES, in answer to your question . .

Replacing a bad 02 will pay for itself over time. With the bad o2, I got like 225 miles per 15 gal. Now I get about 300 miles. That's about $6 per tank difference. If your 02 sensor costs about $80, that's about 14 tanks of gas.

I have started to slow down and also stop racing. I used to love engaging in highway races, but now when I see those people, I just let em pass. Even though you dont think anything will happen to you, try blowing a tire at 100+ and someone cutting you off, not pretty. Life is too short, I just slow down and enjoy the ride. I guess I am getting old and not so much of a "boy racer".

I am like you deezo 50 miles one way to work, I drive a total of 110-120 miles per day.

i see no significant difference in my gas mileage between driving 65-75 and 75-90 mph

i just filled up yesterday running 24 miles per gallon running 80 mph on the avg with occasional redlines in 2nd and 3rd trying to keep up with the socal members on the freeway

However, I do try to stay below 100mph, just in case I do get pulled over. I'd rather get a ticket than go to jail.

In AL, 25 mph over the limit is considered "aggravated speeding". I always stay under that threshold.

Generally, I don't get above 60 mph on my 10 mile commute. But, that's about the speed of the rest of the traffic, so I'd have to try too hard to go much faster. I've been getting about 25 MPG for the last 4 or 5 tanks of gas, so I guess that's decent for daily driving.

I'm never drive 10mph above the limit unless I'm feeling a bit froggy on a highway entrance ramp or something. The fear of getting caught speeding is just one less thing I have to worry about. I save my fast driving for the track.

I notice no difference in mpg regardless if I drive nice and if I get on it a bit. The only reason my mpg would change a bit is if I do more highway or city driving.

I think a lot of my gas usage is from accelerating hard because I do a little bit of city drive to get to the interstate so I've eased off on the throttle on take off. Now that its cold, the car runs much stronger and I like to feel the extra power when accelerating but I needed to gain some control over my driving habits. Driving a bit slow is much more relaxing and easy on the tranny.

When travelling to the midwest a couple of years ago, I averaged 80 mph the whole way to Broken Arrow, OKC and my fuel range was about 426 miles per tank. I was able to to get 460 by keeping it under 75.

I gotta drive slow regardless. Filling up on 100 octane gets quite costly; That and the fact I get no more then 12mpg on the highway stinks!

sup deezo, i heard only the front 02 sensors factor in gas mileage. The back one i think only makes driving better.

try not to get it over 2k when accelerating.. that's the only thing that keeps me from feeding the local pumps since at my cruise speed fuel economy is non existent. and it must work i guess. getting 320-360.. i can't justify the time wasted of my life going 70 to save a few $ down the road.

440 is a bit on the extreme. I also notice that he lives in Florida which is about the flatest place in the US. Most us are getting 22-26mpg depending on city/highway driving. Larger and wider tires suck out a lot of mpg due to rolling resistance. I loose over 2mpg running 17s vs the 15" sawblades and the 17" combo is actually lighter.

i had that illness till i racked up 11 points and hundreds of dollars in fines as a kid in my trans-am GTA. my 385hp 700r4 shifted like a freakin tranny on crack street/strip trans-am GTA was fast but not faster than the motorola in the cop car. then i bought the max. im not saying i dont get on it every once in a while say on an on ramp to a highway but dying or killing someone isnt worth winning a race. to prove what ? your faster ? whoopity doo now what. save it for the track where there is rescue crews and sanctioned events that are legal !!
