front input gear bearing failure question??
i just pulled apart my tranny.
96 max se 5 speed manual tranny 106k
the only thing that i found wrong with it on the inside was the front input gear bearing was broke apart. the metal race that the ball bearings sit in was broke and the ***** were loose.
any tranny experts please reply....
is it worth putting in new front and rear input gear bearings and putting the tranny back in my car??? (do u think i will have problems down the road if i do it that way?)
or scrap it and pick one up from a salvage yard?? i found a couple with good mileage for around $650-750 near my house.
what do you think caused the bearing to break apart??
i have a friend that is a nissan mechanic/master tech at a local nissan dealership that said he would do my diff. bearings for $100.00 on the side. maybe he would throw the front and rear input gear bearings in too????
what do you guys think i should do????
any input would be greatly appreciated
thanks

When I did the tranny conversion I bought a transmission from a junkyard out of state. The tranny was warrantied, but I tore it apart for inspection anyway. I found loose ***** from a broken input shaft bearing (just like you, coincidentally, don't know what would cause that), and the differential bearings were pretty severely damaged. But all the gears and synchronizers looked good, so I put new bearings in it and put it back together. It has been 25,000 miles since then with no problems whatsoever.
By the way, when I called the junkyard about the broken bearing, they told me that the warranty was voided since I took the transmission apart!
They eventually refunded me $100.
