Y-pipe with stock exaust??? worth it or not
#2
Lots of us run the y-pipe with the stock exhaust system. What you might want to do is run your K&N panel with the OSCAI Intake Mod.. Do a search for it. If not.. Get a cone intake. OSCAI should be quieter. You just want to make sure you're giving the car enough air to take in. But there is a very good gain without the catback.. The catback exhaust only gives about 3hp or so. Not worth the money or the noise.

Thank you for an itelligent reply. I was expecting the "use the search answer" but I never saw anything asked about stock exaust. I have seen alot of posts related to this OSCAI and will do that. What does the OS stand for? I am gonna get in the CM ypipe deal. Thanks again.

I also want to keep noise down on my new car. So I will be keeping my stcok muffler, with just some crome tips, and the Y-pipe added more then noticable gains. I will be replacing the B-pipe though, as it has some serious crimps.
All in all, cat-backs won't add much more then5 hp, but you'll get at least 10hp as a single mod with the y-pipe. It does work even greater with a CAI though, like I had on my Maxima.

My current mods are a Poorman's CAI, Stillen Y-pipe, RT cat, and Courtesy B-pipe. I use to have a HKS muffler, but the sound was too ricey for me. I also use to have a HKS intake, but the noise was also too much. I got rid of both parts and my car just ran it's best yesterday plus my car is much quieter (~20% louder than stock). I dynoed the HKS intake vs the Poorman's CAI and my car made the same power and I'm almost certain the Poorman's CAI is making more power when the car is rolling and the airbox is pressurized.
All in all, I don't think a aftermarket muffler is gonna flow any better than stock and a revised stock intake will flow as good as a aftermarket intake. Save your moeny if you don't want the noise. From my track experience and dyno results, "it appears" that these very common aftermarket mods do very little.

I'm really not sure what the OS stands for.. For that you will have to do a search.. hehe.. =) The stock muffler doesn't seem to be that much of a restriction. You may want to consider getting a Courtesy B-Pipe if you want more gains but not full blown aftermarket exhaust noise. But I think the gains are minimal. I'm going to keep my car as quiet as possible too.. I'll turn to other methods to get more power out of the car.. <evil grin>
