PIAA... 55watt = 85watt... so what's the deal?

ok... so we've all seen the 55watt = 85 watt business right? so what's that mean, that some how magically that PIAA was able to make a light so great that it produces that much more light? Well, the truth is no... that's not the case... here's how it's done.
Bulbs like PIAA have the filament wound a little differently. See it's a larger diameter wound and there are fewer coils. So what that means is in the actual housing they have now effectively changed the beam pattern. In most US headlight housing that means the hot spots are reduced in size... any way to see it is the intensity has now been focused. So if you now measure the light output in this hot spot, guess what?!!?!? more lumens! bam! now you have your magical 55watt = 85 watt business.
But is this good or bad? Well... assuming that just focusing this hot spot will not effect other areas of light, this would be a good thing. But guess what?! you don't get something for nothing. Since in most US headlights you already don't have as much lateral lighting, reducing/focusing the area of light to create this hot spot just made things worse.
So in short... $60 is not a good investment. Yeah it might look better... but do you want to see or be seen?
