Turns out it was the check engine light that was on (i swear i saw an oil container on that yellow light). anyway, it was the yellow light all the way to the right. well i just got home from work so i missed the call but apparently they talked to my mom and from what she says there's a problem with 2 valves, and the seals on the valves and that "it should cost $265...maybe more"

Isn't the oil light red and the check engine light yellow?
I can't believe none of us caught that yellow light fact.....

The odd thing is bad valves and bad valve seals won't trigger an check engine light direcly. Maybe if these things were making the car run so bad as to trip an O2 sensor or etc... If that's the case, I give kudos to the mechanic for finding the true problem and not the symptom.

lol yea, i have no idea why i thought it was the oil light. the light is in fact red for oil and yellow for engine. blah whatever. i'm now $285 poorer. i picked up the car and the engine light is now off but here's what the repair bill said:
replaced connector, o ring, and valve...
specifically:
"found codes P0446 and code P0440
vent control valve, o ring, and connector, internal failure, needs to replace parts and recheck."
parts:
air hose $1.68
o ring $1.68
valve assembly $74.98
total labor: $185.25
total parts: $78.34
losing the $300 you were planning on spending on subs: priceless
