strange trouble starting the max, please help!

Sometimes my max (92 SE) just won't start when I turn the key. It doesn't turn over, just does nothing, makes no sound. It's not the battery --all the lights are bright. I've discovered that by sticking a pair of needlenose pliers into the engine and touching a couple bolts on the starter, it'll make some sparks and the starter will whirr, and after that it will start right up. The thing is, it first happened a year ago and after "hotwiring" it with the pliers once, it didn't have that problem again, until this week. Now I have to do that every day. (but not every time I start it, sometimes it will start on its own) Anybody know what's up with this? Am I screwing up my car? Is some kind of connection dirty or something? thanks for any replies.

I had a similar problem for awhile, and it was the ignition switch. Everything worked, but when I would go to start the car - nothing. The good news is that the part was only $30, and it took about half an hour to replace.
BTW, my normal username is brandonj, but for some reason that wasn't working.
