People who painted their stock rims...

....just wanted to know if you had to "prep" or strip(sand) the clear coat first. Or could you just use the Duplicolor wheelpaint and just spray over it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There's a thread on here somewhere about it but I cant search to find it and dont remember where it was. I painted my stock 3rd gen wheels because the clearcoat was just falling off and they looked horrible. I wet sanded them various grits until it looked good and felt smooth, then painted them. Has done great for about 3 months now and looks pretty good.

Good Luck! Joe

Take the clearcoat off and sand the surface smooth if you want it to look good. I did one careful job and 1 lazy-man job with the 2 sets of 3rd gen stockers I've painted and you can definitely tell the difference.

Interesting. I'm just put 97 I30 rims on my car, but I want to remove the logo from the center caps. This would be interesting. I'm thinking of either keeping them silver, or painting the caps black....but that may look wierd. So I'm not sure. Good info nonetheless!
