if your only going to shoot for $50 less you will probably walk away with it lol. Hell with my 92 the guy called me up and lowered his price $700, just because he knew I would buy it if he lowered his price. The Mustang, well that under special circumstances, but it hey, if you can find someone moving out of state/country, normally you can get good deals. My Dad and I got the dealer to drop $4500 under asking price on his 2000, and that was used. Took 3 days, but then they called us and said if we want it come and get it, end of the month = best time to buy
Dont bring price up until later, check out the car, show them your serious, then negotiate. Dont be affraid to walk away, ie. "will you take $4000?" then normally they will have to ask their manager, probably say no then just say something like "ok thanks, here's my number incase you change your mind" or "heres my number, call me when you want it off your lot ". It's not a good idea to buy a car on the first visit, take a few days.

If you are at one of those smaller car lots, especially the low volume types (usually the ones in the autotrader are like this), money talks. Look at their inventory -- they only have 29 cars. They need you to buy a car more than you need the car, especially with pretty high miles.
You know they probably paid $2500-3000(maybe even less) for this car at a wholesale auction, no matter what BS they tell you about talking with the original owner and how he babied it, blah blah blah.
Look at it and if the car seems reasonable, say "I will give you $xxxx for this car in cash."
If they hem and haw over it, say, "Here is my phone number. If you change your mind, call me."
Maybe you have to haggle some, but if they think you will walk, they will usually sell it much cheaper to get the car off the lot. Even if they only make a few hundred, instead of the thousand or so they were hoping for.
