Can i use my old HID bulbs with new ballasts?
i was jus wondering if HID bulbs and ballast are specific to one another, or they can be interswitched within various makes as long as the socket/bulb is the same...i have a 8k 9004 kit (freddy's Zmax) whose ballast i believe blew out, so i was wondering if i can keep the bulbs cuz they are perfectly fine but just buy new, different ballasts, perhaps phillips for more reliable quality. Do the ballast have to match the kelvin temperature setting for the bulb? what exactly can be done in this situation? and if i can get just a ballast, where would be the best place i can purchase that? thanks
i know people that have put 7k bulbs on 8k ballasts. I dont see why it shouldnt be other way around. But the 8k is like the only kit that doesnt have seperate ballast/starter so not sure if its vice versa.
There is no such thing as 8k ballasts, it might be a different style ballast, but it absolutly does nothing to define the color.
You actually can use hella gen 3 OEM ballasts without much trouble. You will can either cut the d2s plug off the hella ballast and add matching connectors to what your bulbs have, or just cut the plugs off both your bulbs and the ballasts and connect the wires (There are two wires going to the OEM style plug, but It'll look like one because they are covered by a single piece of shrink tube... cutting that plug off will reveal them. Then there is simply two wire leads coming off the hella ballast for power (assuming it comes with all of the wiring) and you can then splice that into your stock headlight harness. Positive to the low beam, and negative to negative, or if you want to get fancy, create a harness with relays and fuses, etc. (the RIGHT way of doing it would be this).
Also, yes.. you could use another brand of "aftermarket" ballast with the plug and play style connectors assuming they match (which they usually do) or again, just cut all of the plugs off and start connecting wires.
Check ebay for the parts.

these are also a different setup from 7k, 6k etc. because they dont need an external starter. So i would think the technology is a little different thus not being the same as a 7k ballast? but i'm a noob what do i know
