350 was the cheapest and 670 was the most expensive.. I called about 14 different shops.

oh I thought that one shop was telling you it would cost between $350-and$670 for labor.

First i vote for other because i love my 5th gen clutch setup, grips hard, feels great!! Also people talking about taking your car to a shop, you really should look into doing your own work so you can save alot of money and suffering if a mechanic forgets to do somthing. That way you do somthing wrong you only have yourself to blame

ACT Stage 1 "Heavy Duty"

I drive a 98 SE 5 spd with no mods, 168K, 155K at the time of the install. My stock throw-out bearing had issues, which required a tear-down. I decided to install a new clutch kit, slave cyl, and associated lines.

Initial driving impressions were rock solid - the pedal feel was excellent, which in my opinion, means hard. Definately stiffer than stock pedal, but I would describe the pedal feel as perfectly balanced and proportional between the brake and gas pedal. The stock clutch always felt limp, too easy to engage and depress, without much feedback. With the ACT, the clutch pedal is solid and offers a very positive feel. The engagement range is narrow and precise, and has remained very consistent.

However, it is now impossible to feather the clutch from a dead stop. Well, it's possible, but the shudder is jaw-breaking. Smooth shifting now requires much more delicate work with the right foot, but that's with any after-market clutch. If you're a novice with the manual transmission, you'll learn to be a pro real quick (with or without wiplash).

There's no slip, but take it for granted that I'm not modded. Continuous heal-toe'ing and revmatch downshifting has produced no change in clutch performance. It's a great product in my opinion, amongst many others.

My ACT chattered too... eventually stressing and tearing my engine mounts. I replaced the mounts and changed all the bearings in the tranny. Problem solved, no more chattering, smooth as stock, just heavier pedal.

Ok, so I'm bringing back a really old thread, but I figure its better than starting a new one on the same topic.

Someone had mentioned that people should state their exact situation ebfore asking to get better answers, so here it goes: I have a 98 maxima, I want to replace the stock clutch since I am swaping in a VQ35DE, and I've read that the stock clutch can't handle the VQ35's torque. Would an exedy stage 1 suffice? Spec stage 1?

This is a never ending question and IMO I am glad you found it and it is ALWAYS better to post in an existing thread vs. starting a new one. I am also in the market for a new clutch kit, I'll prolly go ACT stage 2 since my Spec Stage 2 slipped too soon.

That is a rather big jump in power from the 190 stocker VQ (to 255HP IIRC) like a 30-40% increase. I would get a [insert brand] stage 2 personally.

265 HP, its on 04 maxima engine. I went with the exedy stage 1, so far I've been driving it easy, breaking the clutch in. I'll post a follow up in a couple months or so when I see how it holds up to more spirited driving.
