My BOSE cd headunit has matching BOSE speakers, each with it's own amp. I heard that when I change to an aftermarket headunit I will have to switch speakers as well. Not sure if the headunit you are looking to get will have to have the matching speakers too (something about a 1 ohm speaker).

Re: Not sure

I just found out that Bose radios are not amplified meaning that they require the bose speakers. Thanks man.

Are you sure about that? I thought the rear speakers are powered but the fronts and tweeters are amplified through the head unit?

Is there enough space in the door to accomodate an amp behind each speaker?

I think I clean things up here...

I have an AWIA headunit with the rest of the BOSE system... In order to do this you need a special adapter.

The BOSE system, while very good for a stock system, is not that great compared to any decent aftermarket setup. Therefore I would never recommend upgradding to BOSE unless you already have it, just find somebody who knows a lot about car audio and have them build you a system from scratch.

From the best of my understanding, all the speakers in my car are amplified by their own amp located next to the speaker.

hope this helps

I believe that you are correct, the front speakers are powered by the head unit, and the rears by a seperate amp. This only applies to 4th gen cars. On the 5th gen there is an amp located in the trunk that powers the entire system. If you already have an amplifier then connect the rear output from the bose head unit to a pair of RCA cables and it will work, I did this on a friends pathfinder with the bose unit.
