Love and Hate my max!
What can I say...I hate the fact that I owe 19K and its worth 16 but I tell ya....this thing is a blast....It burns a Qt of oil every 1500 miles but 20 ft of rubber hitting second at 6700 brings a smile to my face every time. My wife thinks I'm crazy...she drives spirited, and loves that " it goes when you push the pedal down" but she's never has seen over 5K rpm's.... I get in it and scramble for traction in 1st and 2nd, bang third and.....what can I say, fun car. Later this Year it's time for another..??? S60R??? TL-s (if they make one) who knows...........AWD or RWD and at least as much fun....... Funny to think of her first car when I married her, Renault Alliance......Those were the days. At least she's now requesting manual transmissions.

I have a service writer down my street so I will talk to him about it. I have done all my own maintenance so I can already hear them *****ing and asking for reciepts and records..........I would also have to repair/replace my ported airbox / K&N before they saw it. Its the only mod on the car. we will see........I usually only keep a car 3 years anyway and in July its time.......As long as I can come somewhat close to breaking even, I may have to add a little cash because this car with Leather/Bose/Titanium Pkg.......has depreciated terribly from what I paid. And yes I paid like invoice less rebate. All those rental 02-03's available killed our resale.

I've owned 2 Maxima's, and not once has service asked to see my recepts and records. With that said, it's extremely important that all receipts are kept in the event that is a serious engine problem. Remember, the service department cannot discriminate against those of us who change our own oil. If you are changing the oil and reasonably inspecting the car every 3,750 miles AND having the 30,60,90K mile checks performed by a licensed mechanic then you're fine.
Burning a quart of oil between changes is a serious red flag. Unless you're racing your Max, or drive it above 6K RPM, there is a problem. Tell those service chumps that you bought the Maxima because it's the best V6 out there. If you wanted burning oil, you could have saved thousands by getting a Ford or Pontiac.

Very unusual burning a qt of oil. sound like some VW that I know that burns that much oil. You beat the hell out of your car, what are you trying to prove/test, durability? it's your car, good luck what you do with it.

I drive it no harder than any other car I have owned, it doesn't smoke or leak but I do have to add oil between changes. You must drive like a *****, probably one of the people that think anyone driving faster than you is crazy and anyone slower is a jerk..and its more like good luck to the dealer/person I trade it in to!!!!!! And yes my car is a durability tester........just like the Maxima I had before it, the 3 BMW's, the civic, Acura and ford and.....get the idea? Thanks for the good luck anyway!

My old 1990 Toyota Camry burned about a quart or so between changes for whatever reason from the day we got it new and it ran fine to over 200k original miles too. 1qt between changes is not out of the ordinary. It depends a lot on how it's broken in, and I've found that oil consumption is much more likely on manuals when you're more likely to "hang" the engine at higher revs for longer than an automatic which will just upshift. Closed throttle + higher revs in a lower gear = lots more vaccum pressure in the cylinder and that's where the oil consumption seems to be.

The thing runs like a top and had an easy breakin. Who knows why it goes thru oil....I am going to talk to the service rep up the street and he may do something but I know Nissan would normally laugh and say its normal.....on the high end of normal, but normal.
Hey SteVTEC.....can't that fancy cartest program of yours tell me where my oil is going????? ha.

If your asking me.......52K miles and its easy to tell when you do an oil change. The level is perfect. Then 1k later it needs 1/2 a qt to get it to the full line....then 1K later you add another 1/2 qt and then its low again when oil change time comes around again.

Stev. RPM + closed throttle = high vacuum conditions. So you might be sucking in oil from the valve stem seals that seal oil from the heads/valvetrain.

Lots of coasting = high oil consumption apparently. I think I'm starting to see the pattern, at least in my case.
