I have finally joined the 400 miles a tank club
Here is my dials showing 400 miles right as I got to the gas station. After filling up, it only filled up 16.8 gallons which means I was getting about 23.8 mpg. I could have gone another 10 or 15 miles I think. I am very happy, so I decided to share it with everyone. I normally would only get 360 during warm weather and 340 during cold weather but my car is liking me or something and I jumped up to 400.
I put on 432 miles on 16.2 gallons during our fishing meet. 100 of the miles were stop and go. I guess the constant 80-100mph driving got rid of tons of carbon in the engine cause the gas mileage around the city has improved.
Been there, done that at least a dozen times and I have no Fidanza. Just a 5-speed, light traffic, cruise control and don't exceed 75 mph.

Living in Reno I would have thought you would get a lot more than that. Aren't you out on the open highway where you could cruise all day with limited traffic.
What octane do you run at that elevation?

Those 4th gens sure are gas hogs...
I drove to Seattle and back on Sunday and was at 385 miles and filled up with 13.46 gallons (stock wheels and tires, too) when I got gas in the Yakima Valley on the way back. I figured it out to be 28.6 mpg. I also had to go over several mountain passes. I went from <250 ft to over 3000 ft (three times before refilling), then back down to <100 ft.
Previously, I drove to Seattle through Portland (mostly flat) and got just over 30 mpg.
If I were on a flat highway, I am sure I could approach 500 miles to a tank, but some stretches out here have gas stations few and far between, so I doubt I will try it. hehe

My 4th gen pulled 350 miles on its first tank, 54 liters (14 gallons) with a VQ35 in it and those are VERY VERY HARD 350 miles. I mean rev limiter 24/7 and quite a few 100+ mph runs. I might try a mostly highway, granny driven tank to see what it pulls. No doubt 400+ miles I wouldn't be surprised. A new Knock Sensor and 3 new Oxygen sensors do wonders, even with the bigger motor.
Not sure if i can do it anymore as I haven't seen it in 5 years, but I used to get 31-32 coming back from Montreal, cruise set at 72-73 mph.
I know that when I go up to NYC, if I go off-hours where there's no traffic, I've gotten 28 on the way back, 75 mph or so cruise.
Imagine the new C6 Corvette gets 28 mpg, 400 HP, and has the 1920's pushrod technology. Amazing.........

That's pretty good. I routinely can get 29 with a lot of climbing involved and have had as high as 31 twice. I think I could possibly get 32 on a relatively flat run if I kept the car at say 70 mph on cruise control and traffic was light.
By the way the 31 mpg, put me in the 550 mile club as I was running on fumes both times.

I'm sorry but I find that very difficult to believe as that is by far the best fuel economy I have ever heard of for a 4th Gen, particularly based on 80 MPH. 32 MPG I can believe, but not 35 at 80MPH. You would have had to be coasting down hill to get that kind of mileage.
How many miles did you put on the tank? Was it virtually empty? Did you fill it to the brim?
Unless a fillup is made based on gas almost spilling out of the tank at the before trip fillup and after trip fillup, there can be a fairly wide variation in gallons consumed in the calculation. I can put in quite a bit of gas after the pump clicks off and I generally fill the tank right up every time I want to calculate MPG.

It would be interesting to see what mileage a VQ30DE could get on a round trip between Reno and Las Vegas at a constant 60 MPH. The only problem is it would be virtually impossible to drive that slow.
I drove all night in 1977 from Reno to Las Vegas in my 1973 BMW 2002 tii and I don't think I went below 90 the whole way. The only traffic on the roads was jack rabbits, lol!
Reno traffic sucks.

i used to drive from Tucson to Phoenix and back every weekend with very little city driving in between, and got around 450 miles out of each tank... that was cruising at 85+ pretty much the whole way... very boring drive but at least it didn't take very long LOL

I will shoot for 500 now. Although the 400 was all city driving. That's why I'm most excited.
I can easily get over 400 all highway driving. I have recently driven 100 miles city and then a 265 mile trip and I still have a 1/4 tank left. So I'm at 365 now and will fly over 400. This summer I'll be traveling to San Francisco so I'll see if I can hit 500 miles then.
Although what really pisses me off is that my friend get's close to the same gas mileage in his maxima and he puts in 87 octane while I put in 91 (seeing as that's the highest we have here in reno). I just want to smack him.
