bad throwout bearing with exedy st.1 clutch from early 2003 GD

so 2 years later, the throw-out bearing that came with my Exedy clutch (from the group deal from May 2003) decided to crap out on me.

I remember people ahving issues with that batch of clutches too from MaxxTuningUSA group deal. beware those of u who bought it at the same time!

Exactly what happened to me:
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....exedy+problems

fck i even replied to that thread haha.. got owned.

This was the original thread with all the participants from the GD:
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=192897

I'm not trying to knock the vendor or Exedy, but just be aware of that batch with the bad TO bearing...

yeah .. that's what i thought too in that thread i posted LOL

****, this thing happened all of a sudden. I just got home one day and as soon as I got into my driveway, i hear a POP, and it's been weird since. My clutch engages really low, i was hearing a whirring sound ... then i replaced the slave cylinder in hopes it would fix the problem but it didn't. The car was still driveable until my clutch fork got jammed last week and i was stuck.

so i guess there's no real way to tell if it's goin to go bad ... until one day you hear or feel something obvious. I will get my old clutch and t ake some pics of the throwout bearing and clutch disk. I decided to swap out the entire thing for a 5th gen clutch.

did one of the ears break off the TO bearing????

thats what happened to mine earlier this year. i got mine through the dealer ship i work at though. thank god i was like 10 mins away from home.

there was only one thing wierd i noticed before the bearing went out. everytime i would press the clutch pedal it would squeak. i just thought i needed to lube the master cyl. so i didn';t think anything off it. later i realized the sqeaking was accualy coming from my TO bearing. then one day pop and car was stuck in gear.

damn, sounds exactly like the prob i had.

i don't even drive the car hard - basically almost all highway miles. Really sucks!

I will definately get my hands on that bad TO (hopefully it isn't thrown away) and post pics.

clutch disk looks ok, but when i move it around ,i can hear something loose. didn't feel like the springs but could be.

and here was the prob ...

here's one "good" side of the TO bearing

and the problem that triggered my very expensive fix ...

WTF man, this is only 2 fckin years old.

well, now i have a 5th gen clutch and i'm loving it so far.

Need to post the brand and p/n of that T/O bearing. This is why you only use a Nissan oem unit.

yeah ill get the marking info when I get home and post it up.

Live and learn ... if the clutch kit came with it, u'd assume a good brand like Exedy should have a decent TO bearing.

Looks like everyone who has bought from that group deal is confirming this TO bearing prob. If you bought it for the GD - you're about due for a bad bearing.

Actually, anyone who didn't buy it from the GD have this prob before with their Exedy St.1 clutch kit??

Yup I had the same damn problem. Same group deal, and it went out in Oct of last year. I wish there was some way we could raise hell and get a free clutch out of it all. To have to drop serious $$$ after not even 2 years to replace the clutch and new TO cause of a faulty TO is BS

The first thing I noticed when mine started going out was that I had to almost stand on the clutch to disengage it. It wouldnt want to go into first easy at all, and just kept getting worse. This really pisses me off that my cluch, that was fine, was screwed up becuase of a bad bearing, then just to find out that all of us have gotten screwed. Sux too, cause I miss my stage 1.....

I currently have a 93 SE with the exact same problem. The ear on one side of the throwout bearing just broke off. I just checked the old bearing, and it has exactly the same numbers stamped on the face as the one in the above picture. JAPAN SKF VKC3581

I know this is from a 3 year old clutch job from the previous owner. We have had the car for about a year. I am unsure of the brand he used. Excedy, Nissan Key Value, maybe AutoZone. Who knows. Yeah, it sucks big time.
