Gauges stopped working.

Gauges stopped working.
I was driving home a few weeks ago and my gauges died. Then the car did...I had my dad bring me a new battery and we put it in...the car ran fine all the way home, but still no gauges?
So I bought a new alternator and just finished putting it in...the car started up but still no gauges. The fuel gauge is pegged at the top all the way past full, the other gauges are just all down and like the car isnt on.
Anyone experience this? it is really frustrating, I need to get this thing together to get to work, since my 3rd gens brakes just wigged out.
Thanks.

gauges are needed in my car (98) to complete the circuit that charges the battery. One time i tried to be slick and took off my gauges to cheat my odometer but after driving for 30 min, everytime i stepped on the brake, my radio unit would turn off.
I would take out the gauges and see if any connections were loose that might've jiggled off.

This is interesting, I might not have needed a new alternator...if the gauges are tripping out I could not be getting a charge.
