my front and rear rotors look like they are at the wear limit (2mm off stock thickness for front) and I wanted to know what that really means in terms of break performance and how long I have to change them to new ones before I get braking malfunctions?

Less material = less mass to absorb heat... brakes will heat up and reach the upper limit faster... possibly warping, etc...
