So Long Maxima.... Time for a change

It has been awhile since I have even visited the forums. I knew when I lost the urge to even upgrade my car or even post here that it was time for a change. Now I am not a total traitor. I at least stayed in the VQ family..... I finally dropped by the Infiniti dealership last weekend and picked up a G35c 6spd. It seems I have the itch again to upgrade.

I wonder if I will even miss my old max.... hmmm maybe on a rare occasion.

The worst part is I was so tired of my car I didn't even remove any of my aftermarket parts..... maybe it was just laziness. Oh well... lol

Good choice! Did you trade the Maxima in or sell it privately? Given that you didn't even remove the mods I guess you had hit the wall with the car. How many miles were on it and what kind of condition was in it?

If you sold it privately, did you recommend the .org to the purchaser? If not, that is being a traitor, lol!

Enjoy the G. Doesn't seem like a traitor to me, the G/Z is a logical step from the Max in my opinion. Just dont put SKYLINE 350GT like everyone else, that became tired before they even put those things on eBay.

Just traded it in. I drove it hard and wore it out. Was about to need a new tranny, another clutch, new front struts, and new tires. Had 130k on it and other than the above was in good shape. Still pulled hard off the line and on the interstate. Wish I had a chance to line it up with the G35 just to see what kind of a race it would have been. Guess I will just have to compare track times.

Would Love to do that...

I would love to get a 6 sp, but it does not come in an AWD YET. I do not know what the weather is like in TN, but write back and let me know how different it is driving a RWD. My current options right now are either a GS300 AWD or the M35. Neither are manual transmissions, but looks like I do not have a choice.

RWD is much more fun than FWD. The VDN system takes some of the fun out of it when it is on, but you can switch it off and blip the throttle in curves to throw out the rear end to quickly bring it back in line. A thrid gear chirp isn't too shaby either in a stock coupe. Hmmm stock.... yes, must change that quickly.

Oh, on a down side of the car, the Maxima Bose smokes the hell out of the G35's Bose system. Radio is POS. Go figure..

Hey Clint,

Its been a LONG time!

You should have kept it, and used it as a daily driver.

I just re-joined the Maxima family again, for the 3rd time, with another 4th Gen 5 speed.

I got tired of putting miles on the Z, and the Armada, so I got the Maxima to drive to work, and help with some of the load.

That, and I still love them!

Full pics of the Max are here.

Oh, I still have a 99 SE in the family. Just didn't feel like repairing the 98. Too many things about to go wrong.

You can still get 330Xi in six speed. In fact an automatic is still an option for all BMWs except the 7 series

I'm 100% sure that STI got 6speed and I'm pretty sure that AWD 330 has it too.

Clint,

you haven't posted since 03, what happened to you? I bought a new vehicle (05 frontier), but I still have the max, I don't think I want to part with it just yet.

Just rained and ya, even with the VDN on it will slip the wheels, but not as long as with it off. It will spin, then break the wheels to slow them down to grip again.... not really sure I like the feature.... at least you can turn it off.

03 - Today. Hmm, I guess work happend to me and a bunch of online gaming. lol

Once I stopped modding the Max I just didn't even care about reading up on the forums. Think I even went 4-6 months between washes on occasion.

I am starting to realize that I like Maxima.org forums better than just about all of the G35 forums I have found so far.... hmmm

today i left the mall and i was making a turn at a light and the ground was real wet.. and i had started off in 2nd.. then the system applied the brakes.. and then i started bogging because i was in second.. felt like the car was stalling.. well i guess it was

Yes, this would be an accurate representation of why I don't like the system... lol That and I think it promotes wearing out the rear breaks faster....

I just got back yesterday from 2 weeks in Japan, it has cooled off quite a bit. It is about time to go to the track.

does that plenum spacer do anything? there's a new post on G35driver.com about this secret mod that adds 18whp. they won't say anything because they're waiting for publication of Z mag in a few weeks. i'm finding out NA mods do less for the G than it did for the max. i will miss my max when it's gone. it just has so much more room and utility. no more longboards on the roof. i will try to match mod for mod with my max and see how it goes.

The 5/16" spacer adds about 10whp/wtq. Not to bad. I'm considering the spacer and a true dual exhaust for my G. I'd like to think 14.0s are possible.

Guess who one of the test pilots is for this new "secret" mod.....the infamous (Russ). BTW, this is the second G35 Russ has bought in the past two years.

As for forums, all the G and Z forums suck compared to Maxima.org. A majority of the G/Z owners are clueless and are first time modifiers. You could tell them they'll gain 20whp by switching to two-step colder spark plugs and nearly of them would believe you.

it seems more and more people are leaving the maxima, heck i have had mine for 8 years, that is hard to believe. the cool thing is i can still just turn the key, she cranks right up after a long hard 160,000 miles and runs like new. your still in the family minus the burger and thats all that counts ! the new g35 sedans are the ultimate maxima in my book. its a shame maxima didnt progress into it but thats cool. anyways keep on rollin with the VQ !

so the G you got, is it an awd platform ? that is sweet if it is !

wow, russ?!! the sick thing is i'm right back where i started from in terms of the VQ. all motor 13s. and the worse part about it is, there's no sleeper value. i'm quite disappointed in the coupe's bose. i've posted in g35 driver and FA. occasionally i check out m350z.

Congrats. I am looking for a G35 sedan myself. Hopefully next year when the 06's start getting discounted from MSRP. I agree that it's a shame the maxima didn't progress into the G35... Nothing about the car seems "luxury" class to me. The stereo in particular is pretty woeful as was mentioned.

The AWD 330 just came out. The instructors at the clinic heavily advised against AWD, because it cannot handle the way the cars they provided could. They got the car to 50.6/49.4 with RWD, it's a shame to have to give that up and sacrifice handling as well and gain something that virtually never comes into play. Remember, AWD will help when you are stuck (not really though) and when you're accelerating or applying power in a situation where the conditions are slippery. Otherwise, it simply adds weight (on a FWD car it could be good weight since the car is so biased towards the front), friction, and worse handling. STi is a little different, the power and torque are so high that you probably couldn't use it in such a light car with RWD....

You have to drive an Audi product to appreciate how much AWD hurts the handling overall, as they have to accomodate FWD production as well and mount the motor far ahead of the front axle centerline.
