Window problem

My passenger side rear window is saggy. I walked out to my car from work one day and noticed as I was driving down the road that my rear window was down. I tried to roll it up but nothing. When I pulled over to check it out it would not roll up at all, so I was forced to manually pull it up. Then I found out it wouldn't stay up. Any ideas what the problem is and how I can fix it? Is it worth fixing it myself or should I take it somewhere? Thanks guys, as always.

if your window is not moving the window up or down, you probably need to have your window regulator replaced. It's a common problem on 3rd gens moreso then 4th gen Maximas. You might be able to fix it yourself, but the part will run you anywhere from $100 - $200 dollars.

but i think something is broken because the window won't even stay up on its own..its not just the fact that it wont roll up or down, it mainly bothers me that it just slides down and stays down on its own..if i manually push it back up it just falls right back down w/ no resistance...any ideas?

it's the regulator - happened to me once before. If you have a mechanic, you might not necessarily need to have the whole thing replaced. There's a plastic piece inside your door panel that acts like a stop mechanism. He can simply crazy-glue the piece back together and that will solve your problems. If the motor is broken, you'll have to buy a replacement.

I don't think the motor is broken because when I try to lower/raise the window it still makes a noise like its trying to do something, just nothing happens. If its just the plastic stopper piece that is broken, can I do it myself? If so how? Thanks dude I appreciate your help.

Hey man i can relate to your pain because mine was the same way for a while. It is more than likely the plastic piece that is broken. Does the motor still work? And if so does it make this funny sound after it gets all the way to the top of its motion? You can just do like me. Use the window button and hold it up to until you hear the motor stop and more than likely make a funny sound (obviously your window is still resting all the way down this is just to get the motor all the way up in its stroke). Now push the button down for a split second (if it makes the funny sound, it will be a split second after this sound that you will need to stop). Now open that car door if it isnt already, and grab the window with both hands (one on the inside and one on the outside of the car). Now this part is going to sound bad, but with your hands kinda violently yank the window up all the way to the top. After you do this use the window button and pull it up again and it should snug the window up. The window should stay up. This is a temporary fix and will buy you some time until you can get it fixed. The only bad part is that if you or any of your passengers push the window button down the window will slide back down and you will have to repeat the process over again. So just tell anyone that rides with you that the window is broken.

Hope this helps

Thanks for that advice dude, I will do that for now. PhillyMax do you have any ideas for me as to how I can open the door and fix the plastic piece myself?

Hmmm, what if the power window motor appears to be dying and the windows go up and down very slow sometimes but other times are all right?

I've never actually done the procedure myself. I read on previous threads here on the org about glueing the plastic piece back together to solve the problem. I actually had a bad motor (reallllly slow) so I opted to replace the whole thing instead.

If you have a Chilton's on Hayne's manual, I'm pretty sure there's a write-up on this.

I just bought a 96 from a lady I work with and she noted the rr window would not move. I took the door panel off, which is real easy and found it was held up with a hose clamp from a earlier temp fix.
To remove the panel, take a screw out of the hole where you use to pull the door closed. Take a screwdriver and put it under one end of electric switch. One end will pop up and other won't. Pop the cover off that is behind the door handle release and then use a screwdriver to pop the panel off by going around the outside edge. Unplug the electrical connections and remove the panel.
At this point take the brace off and pull the plastic out of the way. If you do it slowly the rubber sticky stuff will stay on and you can reuse it.
It sounds like the cables are still in place, but the connection to the part that connects to the window is broken. You can check this by plugging the switch back up and trying it. If the cables move and the window does not, that is your problem.
At this point, if you just want the window to stay up and not fall, take a hose clamp and put it around the verticle slide below the piece that is connected to the window and tighten it up. This will get you thru the cold weather. Also, I would unplug the connection that runs to the motor until I could fix it.
Take pliers and pull the little white plastic clips that stuck to the door and put them back in the door panel. Put plastic back in place, put the brace back on and align the plastic pins in the panel and pop it back in place.
The going rate on these things at salvage yards seems to be about $75. I bought one off ebay for $46 with $10 for shipping. I put it on and it is working great. Another one went on ebay a couple days ago for $24 plus shipping. The guy that was bidding against me before may have got it. I won the bid on a driver door motor and regulator for $10.50 plus about $10 for shipping. I thought I might use it for parts if needed.
If you replace the unit, and it is real easy, just move the slide down so you can get to the two screws that connect to the window. Take the screws out and pull the window back up and use some good tape to hold it. There are about three bolts that hold the motor assy on and four that hold the the verticle guide on. It all comes out together. When you get a good one, just put it back in like you took the other one out. Just remember to run it down to be able to get to the two bolt holes that connect the window to the regulator lift.
I realize there are some guys that are afraid to tackle something like this, but this is an easy one and you may be able to fix it cheap for less than $50.
