Innovator's thread: who thought of that?
Just what the title says. Just a couple of things that makes me wonder who was the first and just what the heck were they thinking? Keep it to stuff that actually works well. I'll start it off:
*Who the hell thought "hey, I bet if I stick my 5th gen headlights in the oven they'll come apart! And once I'm done doing whatever I want to do to them, all I have to do is put it back in the oven and reassemble it once it's hot again! That sounds like a good idea!"
*"I wonder what happens if I disconnect this little thingy on my wheelwell? Oh, I see! It makes my transmission shift harder! Wow, neat!"
*"I bet I can save some weight if I take off all this gum under my carpet!"
*"I wonder if I can trick my ECU into thinking there's O2 sensors still there?"
*VB mod.
It'd be nice for newer guys like myself to know just who to thank for getting these kinda off the wall ideas and making them work. I got the idea for this thread while staring at my HID's and wondering who in their right mind would think of tossing them in the oven and baking them.

When it comes to 3rd gens, Matt93SE has really done a lot for our cars.
I think Jeff92SE, Aaron92SE and MrGone have also thought of some good ideas.
I would like to know who was the first person to figure out the e36 headlights would work in a 3rd gen?

Don't think the headlight glue thing is specific to 5th gens, or even just Maximas. Think that one's been around for a long time, and somehow I doubt someone just thought of it.
Someone just looked at how they were manufactured or something and said "hey, I can do that again..."

I think it's going to be really, really hard to figure out who did what first. A lot of things were done simultaneously by different people.
I don't think I was the first to do anything, but I was close on a lot of things.
300ZX brakes - Loren had Skyline brakes first, and then Steve Sze had 300ZX brakes back in late '99. I had 300ZX brakes in Jan. of '00. That was a rough one, I had no idea what parts were needed to make it work, we just improvised.
Trying to figure out if bodywork was required to shave door moldings or if it was just taped on like some cars. I forget who did that before me on the Maxima, I know nobody could tell me a straight answer.
This is kind of a silly one, but I found out that the black portion of the B pillar on the 4th gen is just thick vinyl and could be removed to expose the stock color underneath.
I prototyped the Vitek LSD for the Maxima.
Not sure if this one counts since no one else has done it, but I was #2 to put the Audi TT fuel door on a Maxima. Funny thing is the door I'm using is actually off of the 1st Maxima to try it.
My company was the first to create a few of the random interior dressup pieces for the Maxima (door sills, inserts, etc.)
As for the rest of it, I was one of the first people to try out the Sarona body kit and find out it was junk. I was one of the earlier people to fit 19" wheels (I can't believe how many emails I got asking for exact offset/size, whether it would rub, and so on). I was one of the early people to get on the turbo bandwagon. And not a lot of people had custom paintjobs on their Maxima back in '01.
And I'm pretty sure Don was the first to do the VB mod. At least he was running it before anyone else I'm aware of. First guy to sell them specifically for the Maxima also. I'm still running one of his VB's from back in '01.

it all comes down to the "how"......most people here juggle around with different ideas to get to the results they want. it's not really like the way rubber was created.....by accident. we all know what we want, now what do we try and fudge up to get there. then someone else comes up with a better technique.
matthel (turbo95max) was the first few 4th gen got turbo....
nadir_s red-out tailight mod...
i was the first who got bomz intake w/ positive feedback....after that many people went with the ebay intake route over weapon R, injen, stillen, and JWT. lol...i guess that doesn't really matter.

BTW: Here's one guy that really irks me! Every time I think of something new, I find out he's already done it! Starting to **** me off!
whitem3's car:

....I'll show him! I'm getting a redline body kit instead of the stealin' classic lip kit! That way I can finally be different!

then maxs asked the question of why not put a vi instead of a mevi and everybody flammed him saying why would we want a vi when we have a mevi already and people said if the vi was better then the mevi everybody would be using that IM. and now look what is happening.

i was the first with safc-II and racing seats in a 6th gen, and i am fairly certain that i was the first with an intake on the 6th gen as there was not one out and i custom made it. I carried over from a 4th gen so that explains the intake.

well... I've (actually, "we") a few things -
1. vq30de-k in '96 auto, but no 00VI
2. vq35 and 6spd in my 2000 max, so this way i got 5.25 gen max
3. vq35 and 6spd in 96 max, complete swap with vias, ecu, etc.
4. 2002 steering rack and lower control arms in 96 max
my 2000 max still got that vq35 in it, but it's auto now
vsamoylov has i30 dash/seats/door panels in his 96 max...

I believe Emax was a pioneer for the 5th gens??
Didn't he customize a Stillen classic lip on to a 5.5 gen before Stillen released the actual lip for the car?

He also thought about 350Z intake manifold for the VQ35, but hood clearance was an issue. I think he did other things, but I can not remember.
SR20DEN and whatever that secret intake manifold mod is. It seems to do wonders though. 270whp all motor!

i believe Krismax was the "father of the 00VI"
I have plans for fitting a 2k1 gauge cluster in a 98, i believe i would be the first one for that, and I think that I was the first one to do a complete 5spd swap for less than $1k (including parts, fluids, tools, and installation). Maybe someone's done that before me though.

Once I get mine done, we have to meet up, even if it means driving 8 hours!
BTW: I just wanted to check something: you don't have a T/C, do you? Just checking....
Bback on topic: can you post a close up of your headlights? I heard that you have the interiors painted to match the car. I was talking about doing it and someone (surprise, surprise) told me you already did it.
