My buddy here at work just got a TL Type S about a month ago, and it's really great... all the features you could want for ~$32K... then I saw all the changes on the 2002 Max.
260 HP = same as TL
VTVC (or whatever it is) = VTEC
navigation system = same
driver's seat w/ memory = same
entry/exit system = same
16" rims base, 17" rims SE = 16" rims TL, 17" rims TL Tupe S
engine cover = same
6-disc in-dash changer = same
HID headlights = same
braking stability system = TL's traction stability (I think)
LSD on SE = don't know for sure about TL's differential
6-speed on SE = well, the Max is a 4DSC, no luck here for the TL

These are all features that are standard in the Type S (well the nav is an option on both). The only reason he got the TL over any other car was all those features. I said "look at the BMW 3-series", he said "to get the same features, it would cost like 7 grand more". OK, I said "look at a Maxima", he said "for a few more bucks, look at all the other stuff I can get in the TL, that's not even an *option* on the Nissan". He went out that weekend and picked up the Type S.

I guess what I'm getting at is:
It seems like the '02 Maxima is a total reactionary measure to match the Type S. I wonder how many other people passed on the Maxima in the last couple months because of the TL? If the Max is still 2 or 3 grand less after adding all the options to make it equivalent to the TL, it should be a real winner.

Oh man and the power in that car... even with 3 people in it, right at around 4500RPM on the freeway, that car TOOK OFF!!! Going 65, he punched it and we were going 90 in a heartbeat. Very nice.

It doesn't matter. One's a Nissan, the other is an Acura.

right...

But now they'll be more evenly matched, considering that the Max should lose resale value quicker, but costs less to begin with, yet still has all the same goodies.

So what did you mean by your comment man, I don't get it.

It doesn't matter that the Max now comes with all the extra stuff just because it isn't an Acura?

I can assure you that the TL-S doesn't have a helical limited-slip

the TL-S will get a 6 spd for '02, but Max has 13 lbs-ft more torque & 200+ lbs lighter. Go Nissan.

it's funny how the '02 Altima V6 will smoke the VQ30-K Maximas, stockwise.

All the talk about this thing, it better be much faster than it is now. The auto better be doing 1/4 in way under 15 seconds too.

Yeah I noticed this too while watching car and driver on tv. They were testing the tl tpye s. They got a 6.2 0-60 with an auto. I sure hope the 6spd maxima is that fast. If not its not worth spending the extra dough just to say you have a 6spd. Or wait maybe it is. Well who knows until it comes out anyways.

The Maxima should easily surpass a 6.2, although my bet is on the automatic actually being as quick as the manual. This depends on the ratios of the 6 speed vs the 5. If the six is just a 5 with an extra OD, then the 5 speed will be faster, but if the 6 speed has shorter gear ratios, and you need to get third to hit 60, then the auto may prevail. I figure right around 5.9 - 6.0 for either car. The Altima with 240 horse is expected to 60 in 6.3.

Evenly matched in what area??? The Infiniti I30 can't even compete with the TL. Now you're comparing the Nissan Max to the Acura TL Type-S???

1] Since when did Nissan compete with Acura?

2] Since when do people looking to buy an Acura be interested in a Maxima? Shouldn't they be looking at an Infiniti?

Dude! Did you read what I posted?! It's more evenly matched in almost every area! Power, features, price, luxury, etc...
And, yes, I am comparing the '02 Max, decked out with all the extras, to a TL-S.

Open your eyes man, the Max is changing, and that's what I'm comparing to the TL-S!

1) NEVER! And that's my point, the '02 Maxima looks like it's changing to be a TL-S competitor. READ!

2) Jeez, man, nevermind.
