I was comming home from dropping my GF off at work. I was on RT347 and about to get on the highway. I see a IS300 with two young guys in it. They are trying to get through traffic. Not very well.. I might add. Weaving around but not getting anywhere. They are about 5 cars back and I am at the light. I speed up to about 70mph and prepare to merge on to the highway. The Northern State Pkwy. I see the IS in my lane now catching up. I downshift to 3rd and give it some more throttle.. Cruising at 90mph now. There is a log right hand sweeper to get on the highway. I enter the sweeper at about 90 and and when I am almost at the apex/exit of the turn.. I see the IS.. I floor it and power out of the exit. At this point I think the IS may have been carrying more speed than me when I went through the turn.. partially because I wasn't 100% pushing it.. and partially because its probably a better handling car. We come out of the sweeper and he is about 7 cars back. And he's staying there.. from 90-120 he couldn't pull on me.. I topped out 3rd at 120, 6000rpm and shifted into 4th.. In 4th he looked like he was inching every so slightly. Not sure. But while I'm going about 127mph... a freaking Accord changes into my lane!!! He changed into my lane about 10 cars ahead.. I slam the brakes and who knows what I slowed to. I just know my brakes started to fade after the initial hard bite. I have the Metal Lux/Metal Master setup with SS Brake lines.. I felt the brakes get light and I knew I didn't have full braking power.. I kept it floored though.. I slowed down enough and the accord moved out of my lane as I came within a car of hitting him. At that point I hit the hazzards and signaled the end of the race. I got to see what I wanted to see.. I wanted to see if I could hang with a IS on the top end. I think I did a pretty good job for a 4 speed auto. After I get my VB done.. Nitrous is probably next. No NA IS will keep up then.. =) Hehe

Downshifting to third means flooring the gas pedal or simply turning off overdrive

Was it worth almost killing your self or hurting innocent people in the Honda? Also, if you had let of the brakes for a spilt second, and slammed them again, you would have decreased your stopping distance.

Not so lucky with an IS300

I drove down to Florida last weekend from Phily. At about 12:30 AM, I reached DC, and had some fun with an IS300, Galant, 4cyl Accord, and a couple other 6cyl sedans that all wanted to race at the same time. Well, I guess only the IS, Accord and I were crazy enough that we lost the other cars. We would punch it for a while and back off for the others to catch up, but notbody did. So, I found myself in the middle lane, and in front of everybody else. I'm doing about 70ish, with my GF and about 150 Lbs of luggage in the car. Suddenly, the IS, come flying up from the left lane, and the accord is about a car length behind him in the right. By the time the IS gets to my rear bumber, I stomp on the pedal. I should have hit it earlier, but I wasn't sure if they were going to rice past me or line up. I went down to the top of second, and it shifted slowly into third. I passed the accord at about 90, but at 110, the IS was like 6 cars ahead of me and still pulling!!! Quite fast on the top end.

Hopefully, I can get the VB upgrade into the car soon, and the next time I my shifts won't hurt me as baddly.

Actually.. The highway was very empty.. Only that one accord. After the accord there was probably another 1/2 mile before there were more cars. So I shut down after the accord. I contemplated letting go of the brakes but it happened so fast. As for killing people in the accord. There was no nobody on the road. Nobody in front of him. Why switch to the leftlane!??? And why do it when there is a car comming at great speed?? Did he not look? If not.. why not?

Re: Not so lucky with an IS300

He probably gained a lot of momentum on you. Plus your extra passenger and luggage definately didn't help. Like I said, the IS had a passenger. I was alone. I expected the IS to pull on me if we kept going. They have 5 gears and more HP. Its rare that people line up. Its usually the ricer fly by.
