Timing chain replacement?

My Max has 174,000+ miles on it now. I had the 180,000-mile service done last week. The dealer suggested I should think about having the timing chain replaced soon...
1- Does one NEED to replace a timing chain? I thought not.
2- How does one know when the timing chain needs replaced?
3- If I do replace the timing chain, there may be related maintenance items or possible *upgrades* I should consider doing while the engine is torn apart for the timing chain replacement. In view of the fact I am adding a NOS nitrous system soon, what else could/should I have done?
