Inspection with check engine?

So I have a BS check engine light.. p402 i believe.. something with exhaust.

I reset battery, light is off. About 250 miles before it goes back on.

How many miles do I have to drive before going for an inspection?

I know if you go right away, there comp senses that it was recently reset.

Thanks for your help.

Most likely, you will fail the I/M Readiness test that most states use now. Clearing the light, either with a scanner or by disconnecting the battery, will leave the car in a "not ready mode", meaning the OBD II system has detected the code clearing, but the EPA requires a minimum number of cold starts, warm up, run at highway speeds, and cool down cycles before the "not ready" clears from the computer. If, during those cycles, the code reappears, even if the check engine light does not light, a scan will still pick up the code and you will fail. You have an emissions related code, just fix the damned thing......................

P0420 on a 2000 Maxima. Dealer got rid of it with a ECM software update...It's like $95 and fixes the problem for good (if it actually is not the cat)

I have a 0420 code reading which is for a cat converter low efficency bank 1.
The dealer this morning wanted $106 just to do the diagnostic check. He said they have to go through a flow chart of possibilities and if it was truly the cat converter all cost would be covered under warranty. I chose not to take the gamble! Is this problem common? The vehicle runs fine. We don't have emmission check requirements in Michigan. Do I need to worry?

If your car is under warranty a P0420 is 99% covered. Don't let them toy with you.
