I tried doing a search but couldn't find a relative post on the subject. I'm looking into some 225/50/R16 High Performance All Seasons. What tire do you guys recommend? I've browsed tirerack.com And people seem to like the Pirelli P7000, what do you guys like?

Hey Kaleb...

Alot of people I've talked to, many of them at tire shops, don't like the Pirelli P7000ss. They've mentioned that they crack, don't handle well etc. Some of these shops sold these tires also and said that they wouldn't recommend them.

That being said, I still decided to buy them myself anyways. I have them in a 235/45 17 and feel that they are a very good tire. I've only had a couple of other performance tires before and am quite happy with these. We only usually get a few days of snow where I live so decided to get the Pirelli's cause they are one of if not the only Z rated tire with a M@S rating. You see alot of high quality cars...ie BMW/Porsche with Pirelli's on them so I figure they must make a decent tire.

Dunlop SP5000

These are also Z-rated, and I've really enjoyed mine. They are quieter than the 8000's and the traction is great, wet or dry. I haven't tried them in snow yet, but they did pretty well in the mud. They never howl, and the price is right too. Definitely worth a look.

Hi Kaleb. I bought the Pirelli P7000 SS's almost exactly a year ago, and they are the best tires I have ever owned. They will not change the ride quality of your car one bit, but take a turn with them and (with the right suspension mods) they stick like glue, no squealing or sqwaking ever.

My P7000s have about 6000 miles on them now and show no signs of wear yet. They are expensive but worth it, IMO.

I agree with the rest. I ran the P7000s on my Z a few years ago. Decent tire for the price. I put on about 7000 miles then swapped them out for the AVS Intermediates, then I swapped these out for the Potenzas. Grip was pretty good for an all season tire, but it doesn't compare to the other two tires I've used (but I don't expect them to since the other two are much softer compounds). I'm running P6000 Sport Veloce on my Max.. also a very good tire in the wet AND dry. About average in the snow (for an all season tire). I've been using the P6000s for about 3.5 years now.. I'm on my second set.

Thanks to everyone for your comments/suggestions. I guess I'll give the P7000 a try. Again, thanks!

Re: Dunlop SP5000

I second the SP Sport 5000 rec. Excellent tire. If I went summer/winter, Potenza RE730 looks great

I am on my second set of Michelin Pilot XGT Z4 225/50/16R. I get good dry/wet traction, great wear (55,000 miles on my first set), and low road noise. They've been good to me...

I got Bridgestone Potenza Re930i
brand new had'em for 2 months..
I like them... i know they are not as sporty as Dunlop 5000's or 7000's but you said ALL-SEASON and they hold up pretty good in the rain....

Actually, I used to have RE930's on my old 15" rims. I actually they gripped BETTER than my current Dunlop SP5000's on 17" rims! If they made RE930's in 17" size, I would have with the Bridgestones!

Anyways, regarding SP5000's, they are pretty good, but tend to howl when pushed hard. It's not a bad howl, but rather a very progressive kind of feeling. Overall, the SP5000 is a great tire.

Kaleb...

Hey man, we live in Dallas. Why the heck do you need All-season tires? Heck, it didn't even rain here for 3 months. Plus, in the few instances that we do get snow, the whole city shuts down anyways. :-)

I like my Yokohama AVID V4s. Though I think I should have gone with the 225/50 setup. Wet grip is exceptional. Dry grip is pretty darn good too. The compound is very soft though.

This may sound funny >>>>>>>

But I have the PEP BOYS brand FUTURA ULTRA Z's in the size 225/55/16, they are Z rated and they are probably the best tires I have owned besides YOKO AVS Intermediates. They grip great in the wet and dry. The Ultra Z's actually bested or equaled the Pirellis and Good Year tires in some tests according to their brochure.

Michelin Pilot XGT V4 215/60/15

I live in Chicago and wanted some high performance all season tires.... To be honest I would have gone with the Pirelli's, but at least for my stock 15" only racing type of tires were available by Pirelli, not all season... So I picked up the Michelin Pilot XGT Ultra-High Performance V4's and they are probably the best all season tire I've ever used. If you just look at the tire you can tell hydroplanning just isn't going to happen, and in chicago with all the slush & rain that just what I needed. They don't break easy either. I kept on taking 80 degree turns going faster and faster finally when i took one at about 50 I almost went into someone's yard so I figured 40mph would be my limit. Driving on these tires was like driving a completly different car, make's the ride much smoother and quieter, not to mention these are ultra high performance all season, Michelin did a very good job with keeping the performance in these tires. On tirerack.com someone complained that they were noisy. I have had no problems with noise. In fact I think they are quieter than all the other tires I've had. If you live in a hot state I'd get Pirelli, but if they are on national back-order or something, don't rule out the Michelin's.

Grip RE930 15" vs SP5000 17"

If you check out the rec.autos.tech and .driving newsgroups,
plenty of people weighed in on a question of profile vs performance. Several commenters felt that the rise to 17" might decrease grip. Rather, it caused a faster breakaway at the limit

My AVS intermediates suck ---- in the rain.
they were nice for like 4k mi now they're just spin whenever it's wet...

discount tire company has a sale on them, only $89 or so each for 235/45... so not too shabby..

i'm thinking about the Khumo Escatas... around the same price range and i've heard nothing but good about them...

This tire was pretty good when it came out but I think it's design is about 5 years + old now. That's fairly old for tire tech.

tires

dunlop 225/50 x 16 sp sport 5000, has a nice tread (asymetrical) and is a z rated allseason radial, the ride is decent too. they are not directional. of course they won't be the best performance tire because they are allseason, but they will be able to go over 150 mph! they have a 340 tread wear code which is good. and they cost 101$ a piece. i believe the tread is different for some of the 15" tires, it is not as agresive and bold. http://www.discounttiredirect.com :vampire:
