I just got a 98 SE and finished the stereo and am not real please with the results. I have BA components up front with 40 watts and a JL 10 in the trunk with 100 watts both powered by an ads amp. I don't feel like I'm getting enough bass, is it because the trunk is so big?

What brand and size subs do you have and what brand and how many watts does your amp put out?

I have a 12" Kicker Soloberic D-Series w/200W RMS from a PPI PC2400 to it. . . It sounds good inside the car, but people trying to listen from outside the car complain I don't have enough bass. . .

Got BASS!!!!!!!!!

How is your box facing front or rear? Have it facing/firing toward the back of the trunk, also is the box sealed? To me sealed boxes provide the best bass. I have a Pioneer 10" in a Q-logic sealed box. With a Kenwood 820 pushing it only 95wRMS, the 10" is 140wRMS so it is being pushed real good. I have been "accused" of having a 2 12"s or 1 15". Find out what the RMS of your speaker is and try to put up to 85% of the RMS on it with a good amp.

what model JL sub is it?

100W isnt' that much for some of their subs.. it's fine for the W1s..

but a single 10" isn't gonna give you tons of bass unless you give it tons of power. I've got three JL 10s with 600W in my trunk and I'm "only" hitting low 130dB.

If you wnat more bass, you have a few options..
1.. aim the box backwards if it's not already.. this will inscrease the pathlength and gives it more room to work.. (buncha physics BS I don't feel like getting into right now).. you may lose a little sound quality going this way, but there's always a tradeoff in SPL/SQ.

2. Add more sub(s).
3. add mroe power.
4. all of the above.

I have a set of pioneer components up front, kenwoods in the back being pushed w/ 65w w/ a USAcoustic amp. I have 2 Audiobahn AW1200 12's in a sealed box firing to the back being pushed by a Cadence A7HC being pushed at 1200+W. From what I hear, the Cadence is underated. I have a Kenwood HU too.

JL Audio

I have two JL 10W0-4s in .75 cu. ft. each. My Phoenix Gold amp gives them 150 watts a piece. They are in a wedge shaped box that faces the rear of the vehicle. I took out the rear speakers to let more bass into the cabin, sometimes I open the pass-through also.

As stated above, face the box to the rear. You are loseing bass thru absorbtion by the rear seats. Yu have the 10w6 or something else. I had one in a sealed box firing thru the ski hole and was able to pop the trunk. The I got smart and revamped my entire system : http://home.earthlink.net/~lovejoy1/maxima.html

I have the JL 10W0 powerwedge and it is against the back seats with the sub firing to the rear. I think I'm going to get a custom box built w/ 2 10w0 with 100W to each.

If you want loud bass, you picked the wrong sub. Get the W3s or the W6s. Put a 500W amp to them. If you are on the East Coast, you can pick up the 12W3 for $140 and a RF Punch 500 for $299 in NYC. Check Ebay, they have stuff for real cheap too.

Re: ? ? ?

I don't think it print on the back of the magnet. It's hard to tell unless you measure the magnet. If it's a huge and heavy magnet. It's probably W6 or W3. If it's smaller than it's probably W0 or W1. Hmm...200W...probably a W0 or W1.

The box makes a huge difference. What type of box? Sealed, Ported, Bandpass, etc...
Is the box the correct size for the subs? I had two JL 10W1 in a crappy Q-logic premade box, and it sounded good (I thought) and then I custom made a sealed box with the JL specs and MDF and Polyfill and it sound A LOT better. Also, 100W: is that peak or RMS? The 10W1 (recommended) can take 125W RMS, but in reality can take more. I now replaced my two 10W1's with a single 10W6 and bridged my amp for even more power and it sounds incredible. Follow the specs given with the JL subs and you can't go wrong. Get a program that will allow you to calculate internal volume. The program that I have is a DOS based program called Blaubox by Blaupunkt.

What braeux said is right if you do not have a box that is exact or close to the specs of the speakers you are going to loose a lot of sound. Try balancing out your front speakers with your sub. You should get a fuller sound that way. But if you want real bass you need more power! Is your amp bridgable? Is your sub a dvc? If so that could help you out a bunch.
I have sony mobile ES compenent set up front with a 200watt cobalt and two eclispe 10" with 1200"PPI and it is a good quaility sound. But if I want I can turn it up! I also need some rear deck speakers, that would help even more.

By firing towards the back of the trunk, you mean firing towards the front of the car, right?

More power =)

I'm running a Fosgate Collection of stuff, ranging from an 800a4 (fronts/backs), and a bd1000a1 (subs) .. The speakers are Rockford Q components in the fronts/backs and I've got a pair of Atomic Thunder Shocker's in the trunk (comp sub, little more SPL then SQ but not bad in the sealed box) ..

It's the only trunk I've heard with pressure leakage screams =) .. And I learned that too much volume will make you deaf real fast after getting it done up like that. Perfect amount for fronts in a maxima is around 60-75w in my opinion (and that'll still probably go too loud)

Oh grasshopper, look closer to your ears. I had a 2 JL 10-4s and was similarly dissapointed. First thing i'de do is get more power to the front mid-basses. I have a/d/s A-series componants and a powerplate 840. I bridged out the front drivers with 120 watts each, 40 (bywired)to the tweeters and 40 to the rear fill A-6.

2-BA 12.5 pro subs (sealed,2ohm)series with bridged MRV-1000. As per BAs recs, vented rear deck. Destroys my JL. The whole set up is very smooth, and strong. Will absolutely stand with the best around here!

Yeah ppl are pretty amazed at my 10 inch

350 watt Pioneer. They always think its one or two twelves in the back. But for the fact that I hve 300 watts going to it non stop bridged the sound of that one ten is incredible. I liek it its not too much bass and not too little . Its just right too.I mean I dont want my system beign advertised by bassing it out all the time. The one ten helps. And its also great having a remote to your deck when the cops are around hehe.

But overall its nothing too dramatic just some thing that comes out just right.
