Bad A/C compressor

My compressor is shot, or so the gent at the A/C shop says. I trust him, and it sucks. I know it is not the compressor clutch; I checked to see if I could hear it engage, and it did. My question is, because I can't afford a shop manual, how much is involved in swithching it myself? Do I have to pull the tranny for clearance, etc.? Just a random question, hoping someone else has some insight into the amount of work involved. This sucks, too, because the $ I was going to spend on my mods has to go to this.
Thanks in advance,
Lee

The compressor unbolts directly from the engine. I would try to take it off myself and buy a replacement unit. Do not try to pull the clutch assembly, just buy a complete compressor. If the compressor is out, then the clutch will probably fail soon also.

much appreciated
I can rest easier now, because that will save me a lot of loot. I appreciate the advice there, ed. Hope I can return the favor one day.

I had similar problem where the a/c would not run and found out that the electrical to the a/c compressor was dead. I had my cousin make a switch to manually jump the compressor on. On hot days like today in New England, I would turn the compressor on for 5mins and off for 2mins on for 5mins off for 2 mins, etc. Check that out. Mines is a 4th Gen 1995. Next year when I have some money I will have my mechanic trace the electrical going to the a/c compressor. That's what I did. Good luck.

Make sure you have long wires and a switch that can be bought at auto store, if not ask a reputable electrician or electrical guy to make a switch for you. Give me a holler with any questions.
