I recently got an ACT clutch (thanks Brian) and am having a mechanic I know at the Nissan dealership install it. In addition to having the clutch installed and the flywheel reground, would it be wise to also have the rear main engine seal replaced while they have the transmission off? My car is a 97SE with 74k miles.

How much does a rear seal cost?

Are there any other preventative things that I could have them do that require the transmission to be removed?

Yes, might as well do the main seal. It doesn't cost that much. Other things. Get the two output shaft seals replaced on the tranny. Again the seals are cheap.

I just finished the rear seal on my 4th gen. The seal is not like the 3g. Its on a plate that bolts on to the motor. It cost me $40. The Nissan FSM indicates that you must remove the upper oil pan, wich is a PItA. If your mechanic can do it with out droping the pan it might be a good idea, but droping the pan could add several hours labor to the bill.

The seal on my used motor was actually a new one but wasn't seated properly, I just reseated it and so good do far. So I didnt have drop the upper oil pan.

The seals are cheap, but to replace that rear seal you're gonna have to drop the upper oil pan (not the lower one that looks like a regular oil pan), but the upper. Its labor intensive, get a price before you tell them to do it.
