2002 Maxima or 98-99 GS300
Checking around, they come out to be about the same price, I think there's little debate over which looks better, as far as performance i'm sure the maxima is better. Since Lexus is owned by toyota i have a lot of confidence that their engines will hold up for a long long time so i'd have no worries buying one with about 50k miles on it. I'd probably get an auto 2002 maxima, so take that into consideration for performance. Which one sounds better to you guys for an overall car?

max fo sho...
i would have said the lexus, if it was a gs400, but not a used gs300 over a new 2002 max. yeah, if you choose the max, get a 6-speed, those are suppose to be fast, but i think autos are quick too(no where close to a manual though).

If you are going to resell
Get the Lexus. You can add 15K miles in a year and sell it while probably losing $3,000. If you sell the 2002 Maxima next year, you'll lose about $8,000. I'd go with the GS400 and not the GS300. The GS400 should cost about $2,000 more and you get so much more car. When the cars were new, the GS400 was priced $9,000 more. The used GS400 is a bargain compared to the GS300.
Depending on how long you plan to keep the car, I'd get the Lexus. Although I think a lot of luxury cars have a lot of electrical problems 5+ years. I'm not sure about Lexus, but BMW's really suck. My brother's M3 has a ton of electrical problems...luckily not a single mechanical.

Hey how'd you do that?! You took the words right out of my mouth I've seen GS400s here in Boston selling less than the GS300s, of course they have about 10k more miles but hey it's a Lexus what's 10K.
There is one for sale now 98 GS400 with Nav,17 in wheels and spoiler with 45K for $28,000.

bottlefedmax: i highly doubt gs400 only cost 2000 more than gs300.
pre-owned price vary, but the new ones have around 10k difference plus options. I assume the preowned ones should be 6000-7000 more than gs300.
U should go with a new maxima. But if u were to chose between 400 or 2k2, then go with gs400, its a completely different car/class too.
