Re: Hondas
well, unfortunately.....I agree with yur friend, but only for the late 80's and early 90's Hondas...the newer V6 accords and Civic SIs are having their share of tranny probs I've heard so that counts them out! but the earlier models have very good resale and are extremely reliable...for example my friend's '86 Accord, 250k+ miles only maintenece probs he ever had was a bad radiator and changed the clutch once and he drives the living hell out of it...other then that nada on the major maintenence list! our cars are relaible, but to a certain extent....but I hate to say it but in the 80's and early 90's the slogan should have been "Built Honda tough!"(not Ford tough)

I agree
I agree, when Honda rolled in fuel injection across the board in the late 80s / early 90s, they were like a rock.
90-93 Accords were very solid cars. A buddy of mine and my sister in law still have theirs (purchased new). I had a 91 Accord purchased new and sold at 160k miles. I drove a lot of hwy miles back then, but there are some parts that I'm amazed that I never replaced (original brakes, clutch, struts). Replaced the timing belt and water pump at 90k, otherwise everything was done just as on the scheduled maintenance. Common problems on that model are the climate control dial (plastic breaks), inside door handle (plastic breaks), and failure on the power antenna. All very inexpensive repairs ... all things considered.

Our cars are reliable I have 215k and I still smoke new V6 accords. There are not as many of our cars as hondas. So when you see a modded Max you are like WTF? Maxima's flat out kill pretty much every stock honda. Better looks IMO.

A better car: better feature and/or better reliability. I'd consider the latter more when buying a car.
I skipped some maintenance on my 94 Altima(76K miles now, bought new)and 96 Maxima(37K miles now, bought new). Virtually nothing is replaced, except the max's radio because the face paint peeled of a bit at the time of delivery. I drove my friend's 89 Accord in 91 and found its auto transmission was terribly rough. Still remember when I slowed down to a point the shift from high gear to low, don't know between which two gears, my whole body was shocked and I got scared that time.
My mind is always between Nissan/Infiniti and Toyota/Lexus for some reason.

my sig is pretty big huh, i apologize
in considering the Hondas... hell yea the 1990-1993 Accord were RELIABLE!
but so are the 3rd Gen Maximas, and the 3rd gen have such an upscale feel to them compared the Accord, like they do compared to the 4th gen and they have a freakin 3.0L V6, I mean damn that is a huge advantage!

Hehe, I've had pretty bad experiences w/ my old '90 Honda Accord. Everything's been replaced pretty much twice now but some problems were caused by bad repair work. We recently spent $1,000 on completely new brakes since the last complete set of new brakes(calipers, rotors, drums, master cylinder, and pads) ended up lasting 12,000 miles. Its other problems include broken auto transmission, speed sensor, alternator, cooling fans, falling apart interior trim, various oil leaks, and random body rust. Including accident damage(caused by the shoddy brakes), the car's cost over 10G just in maintainence and repairs in the past 4 years.
Strangely enough the engine has been bomb proof though. The car averaged 10-15,000 between oil changes and it still runs perfectly. I even drove it from GA to NY for a year at school w/ only an alternator change(original after 150,000). Its original timing belt even lasted 140000 before it got changed. It survived a year in upstate NY w/o any additional rust damage and only suffered a broken window and bumper damage from snow.
In spite of all of that, I decided to get another Honda. I had driven Shadow's Maxima a lot before I got my Prelude and I seriously considered a '99 SE but I didn't really want a car that looked exactly like his. I wanted sportier handling and aggressive styling so I went w/ the Prelude. Shadow's Maxima has been completely problem free which is good since every Nissan dealer in GA sucks. We're obviously more of a Nissan family than Honda since we currently have a '97 Maxima, '01 Sentra and a '01 Altima. Of course, to its credit, the Accord has also lasted the longest of any car in our family since most of our cars are abused to death.

Well, I've driven the living pi$$ out of my Max. In 133000 miles the only things that have broken are the starter and an O2 sensor, and those were a long time ago.
So, I think the Max is damn reliable.
