What exactly is a "dealer demo"?

I thought about posting this to the Max dealer forum but it is
a more general topic not necessarily related to a dealership.

A local dealer has advertized a "New" 2001 Maxima GXE with
Automatic Transmission, Comfort and Covenience package, Alloy
wheels, AC for $18988.00. When I visited and asked for it they
told me this is a "dealer demo" but it is considered "New". The
vehicle has 4500 miles on it and it appears to be in good condition.

I asked the dealer whether this is to be sold as a "New" vehicle or
"Used" vehicle. He said it is sold as a new vehicle. But I have
some questions for the forum:

(1) The vehicle has no Moroney MSRP sticker, so it cannot be New right?

(2) If this is indeed new, how does the warrenty works? Does the fact
that it has 4500 miles change the warrenty?

(3) What other issues should I consider?

(4) In your opinion is this a good deal? Would you pay $18988 if you see this in a used car lot with 4500 miles?

(5) What is a "dealer demo" used for? It is subject to a lot of abuse and stress test?

Thanks,

OT

dealer demo is the car everyone beats on when they go for a test drive.. should you pay MSRP? no.. you should pay much less.. considering sales people drive it home.. and everyone test drives it..

FYI, if the car has never been titled, it's still new, regardless of milage.

Thanks for replying. If this is the case does it mean this car is
less likely to have problem (been broken in) or does it mean it is
stressed out and exceeded the design envelope somewhere so it is not
a good idea?

What would be a good gauge to come up with a fair price for such a
vehicle?

Thanks,

OT

They get alot of abuse.. this isnt saying they are bad cars but people alot of times have no regard for them. Usually you can haggle the price of a brand new car down to the same price they would ask for a demo though.. When I asked my manager about selling me a demo he told me he could do the same kind of deals as a new one so why not get the new one..
I do not think I can get a new 2001 MAX GXE + Auto + Comfort/Convenience + Alloy Wheels for less than $19000.00.
But the potential abuse worries me. I will look for more
alternatives before deciding.

Thanks for all the advise.

..

My next door neighbor is a Toyota/Lexus dealership manager he only drives demos, he doesn't even have his own car. His wife has her own Corolla and his son is a Nissan employee driving a Honda Accord.
Anyways, the demos are those cars taking the abuse like everyone has stated. My neighbor never warms up his car, gets in, starts it and leaves.

My buddy is an install manager at a car stereo shop. He does work for Dunphy Nissan right outside Philly. Anyway, one day he was looking at maxima and he told me that they had an 2001 SE Anniversary edition with 3000 miles on it. The service manager said that they use that car to run errands, pick up customers and use it for customers test drive. he told me that when they run errands, they totally beat he **** out the car. A sad sight, imo...

it's all gravy as long as he sets the car for at least 30 seconds and no more than 60 seconds...

Yeah, dealer demo basically means the car has been beat on. But that doesn't mean the car won't be reliable in the future. Maybe you can negotiate the price down, and get them to throw in the Nissan extended warranty for free (not likely).

No more than 60 seconds...why not, I am curious. I usually wait till the rpms @ idle drop near 1000 or below 1000 rpms. This can be a minute or two. Thanks
