Is a third brake light necessary?

I'm thinking of taking off my spoiler and go spoilerless. I probably going to get the trunk repainted and have the spoiler holes plugged up. Maybe even shave off the antenna and key hole. Anyway, if I do that, could I just go without a third brake light? I don't want to mount the dumb looking boxy third brake light that's on non SE Maxima.

From a certain year on the car must have the 3rd brake light. Not sure what year that is though. You're probably looking at getting stoped for lack of one and not passing inspections. That light is a law, not just an accessory. Proceed at own risk.

Hm...maybe I just keep the spoiler on then. I still need to get the trunk lid repainted though, plus I need to buy a clip that is missing for the driver side of the spoiler. Oh well...

I think its actually older then that, 87 or 86. The third brake light is something I would not take off the car.
