Will Nissan provide warranty repairs on used vehicle

Hi All,

Just curious about this since I recently purchased an used 2008 Maxima. I was thinking of calling Nissan and asking them to provide information to any warranty work that's been performed on the car. Anyone know whether or not they would comply?

I'm pretty sure they can provide that information to you by request. I'd be concerned if they felt they needed to "hide" anything that had been done to the car during the previous ownership.

How will him finding out what happened to his '08 help you find out what happened to your '01? I'm sure 8 years of history is going to be much more difficult to track down than 1.

factory warranty in effect from original date of sale from original owner for 3yr/ 36K mi for basic, and powertrain warranty in effect for 5 yrs/ 60K mi.
If car was purchased with extended warranty it can be transferred over for processing fee and check done by dealership, which should've had a CPO or PDI sheet completed since it should be less than 12mo / 12K mi from original date of sale.
You can purchase an extended warranty from nissan and have the payments incorporated into your monthly payments.

I can't specifically remember from my time as a Nissan service advisor, but I believe the records of work done under warranty goes back pretty much infinitely. It is, however, extremely vague and only covers warranty work/recalls not maintanence or anything of the like.

And I wouldn't bother asking the dealer for a copy. That same info shows who has previously owned the car and I doubt they'll give you that. With an '08 he can probably go in and say "hey, I just bought this used, and I'd like to know about what's been done under warranty so far," they'll probably talk to him about it. If you go in asking about your '01 that you've had for some amount of time, chances are good that they're going to tell you they don't have time.

Service advisors aren't your friend, they don't typically want to spend time with you unless you're spending. They're typically commission only paid.

If you know certain parts people or certain service advisors, they will pull that stuff for you. on an '01, it's probably not going to happen unless you call Nissan directly to check on and recall work done to the car. I'm not sure if the '01 had any recalls on them tho, so you may be out of luck in that dept.

As far as the 'used' 08... The factory warranty is transferrable to any new owner, as well as any extended warranty the previous owner purchased. As the owner of the car under warranty, you're entitled to the service history of the car. many/most/all dealers shouldn't have a problem pulling that stuff up for you- at least if you're bringing the car in for service so they're going to make some money on the deal eventually.

don't just walk into a dealership and ask for the records pulled.
Just ask for it while you take it in for some other work..

Hell, even go in to have Nissan change the oil for you on the next scheduled change.. "Well I just bought the car and I'm wondering what's been done with it. I'd like to make sure it's well taken care of. Is there a chance you can pull the service records for me so I know what to expect?"

Just an update. I called Nissan Consumer Affairs yesterday and they happily provided me with the information I sought about the car I purchased. The gave me the warranty repairs (none to date), recalls to date (none), and registered me as the new owner of the car.

I'm glad to hear they were so accomodating! Usually they are happy to help a brand new owner.

Did you buy the car as is or was it a certified pre owned vehicle? I'm curious on why you did not ask all the pertinent questions in purchasing a used car. I too bought an 08 last June and before I started to discuss about price I wanted to see all the documentation for the car. Carfax, pre owned inspection check list, title, any recalls or repairs, etc. I asked everything that I could (made a list prior going to the dealership). I wanted to be an informed consumer so nothing will bite me in the azz in the future. Fortunately my car had a clean bill of health

I purchased the car out of state and did check the carfax, which was clean. But since the car was a fleet rental, came from an auction, and only had 9600miles on it, I wanted more information after the purchase.

Service Advisors are your best friend when it comes to questions.

I've never turned a customer away when a question was asked or even converse with a customer, thats how you build a relationship with a customer. Spending will come when you build the relationship, so understand when you go to a dealership to build a relationship.

I recently picked up an '06 Frontier and went through the same drill. Any Dealer can look up warranty work performed on the vehicle and give you a print-out; but Nissan's system does not record/track maintenance work. You have to get maintenance history from the dealer who performed the work...and that could be difficult if you don't know where the vehicle was purchased or if the previous owner hopped between different dealers.
