Maxima is totalled, brief question

Hey guys! Finally heard back from the body shop and my insurance co. today and they have decided to total out my 02 Maxima rather than repair it.. I am SOO happy. Anyways, I JUST put new tires on it - the Body shop said I have until Sunday to strip it down of anything I own and then it's going to the graveyard. I have off work Friday and I'm heading to the shop to strip it. It's still driveable. Do you think they would let me take the car off the premisis to my local shop to have the tires swapped? I have the old rubber in my barn at home and I'd rather send it to its resting place wearing CRAP rubber not BRAND NEW tires.

Did you rear end someone, or get hit from the left side? can't tell from that angle.

Either way, frame is bent, core support is toast, will need new headlights (mounting tabs are probably all broken.) bumper cover, bumper support, etc etc etc.

That's probably a $4500 dent if I had to guess at it. On a car worth about $5-6k, it's totalled.

As for being able to drive it, most places I've seen won't let you remove the car from their premises since it's pending insurance adjusters and whatnot. untilt hey get pair for their work or the car and it's released by insurance, they're not letting it go anywhere.
in that case, you'll probably have to talk to them and tell them what you're doing... bring a set of jackstands and pull the wheels off in their lot, go get the tires changed, and then put the wheels back on.

If they're aftermarket wheels and you have OEMs at home with old rubber, then you could just change them and move on.

IF you're lucky, the guy at the shop will let you take the car home and do it all there.

All that said, if the wreck wasn't your fault, you can probably bargain with the insurance company a little bit and tell them you just bought the tires- usually they will add some $$ to the value of the car- enough that it's not worth screwing around all day and paying a tire shop $100 to change them over..

.......
Also.. if you do put your old rubber back on.. don't pay for balancing. just have them mount the tires and air them up. they'll look at you funny, but tell them the car's going straight to the junkyard- no need to pay to balance tires that will only drive the car on and off a towtruck.

g'luck.

^^^to add to this...,
check craigslist for some cheapo mustang 5-bolt rims, or something (usually cheap with some sort of rubber).
and sell the wheels.
make a semi-profit.

hey guys, insurance paid out $7200 for the maxima , its going to the scrap yard with the stock rims, i dont want them, they're trashed anyway w/ clear coat damage. I'm going to bring my jack stands, jack it up and take them two at a time to the shop and get the rubber swapped. I have bald tires in my barn. My local tire shop charges me $10 per tire for mount/balance.

talked to my insurance company today they said i can have the rims/tires/whatever else I want, I can leave the car sitting on donuts if I want, they don't care, as long as it has tires on it of some sort cause it has to get onto the flatbed. I'm just gonna swap a dead battery into it and then take out all the other mods/accessories I own, swap out the tires and call it a day. I have no use for the rims. My local mechanic I use offered to remount the bald tires I have on it for 20 bucks for all 4 so I'll do that, then off to the scrap yard with this awful, awful car that I am so glad is gone

My plans for another car are undecided. I still have 2 other cars. I'm using my 93 Civic hatch as my daily driver right now. I live in a city so for security purposes and COSMETIC purposes I'm not going to be purchasing a car right away.I'm going to deposit the check from the insurance co. and when I move out of the city I'll consider getting another luxury car. I'm going for either a Lexus IS300, BMW 328/330I, Mercedes C280, or Audi S4. No more Nissan, ever. sorry folks.

hey, just wondering why your not selling anything? i live in NJ, and am interested a lot of parts. If the insurance company is giving you over 7 grand, and the body shop says take what you want, why not part out the car from the inside? Its up to you, but i think you have the potential to make another 2 grand or so in parts. but w/e its your car, and your loss......

PLEASE tell me you're not going to whine about reliability when you're looking at those cars......

Also.. so you're really not selling the grille? I'll give you $21 for it.

That would be illegal.
If the insurance company pays him for the car, then they own it- not him. At that point, him selling parts off the car would constitute theft from the insurance company since he's stealing the parts from them and selling them.

...... OTOH, the insurance company is just going to auction it off to a junkyard. they're going to get about $200 for the car no matter what condition it's in. it could be a stripped shell for all they care, it'll draw about the same amount at a junk lot auction.

If you want it so bad, go to the auction and buy it from them.

if you read what he said, he said and i quote "they said i can have the rims/tires/whatever else I want" so how is this illegal? He had permission to take "whatever" he wants, and the insurance company can careless what he parts out, their not even going to see the car at all. They'll send a tow truck to pick it up from the body shop, and auction it as-is. He has permission from the insurance company, so Im not sure why he cant parts some basic stuff out?

He's not parting it out because we're a bunch of cheap bastards. $20 shipped for the grille? Do you guys not see how big it is? He's going to eat $1 in paypal fees, a buck or two to buy a cardboard box and bubble wrap, and $10 on shipping, so he pretty much wastes an hour driving to the car and to the post office, fiddling with a stupid grille when it's 30 degrees out, to make like six dollars.

I mena, it's one thing if you've got a parts car and parting out cars is what you do. But for some random guy who got in an accident, parting it out is probably more hassle than it's worth. Stock rims, stock interior (only if it's leather), hood if it isn't bent, trunk lid and tails, the 00VI, and headlights + ballasts are probably the only parts he might make enough money off of to be worthwhile. Selling random trim pieces and **** like that to make $5 off each only works if you rip them all off and then sell a lot of them.

This is true. $35 shipped!? If your company is saying take what you want why not make some extra hundreds of dollars? Turn a negative into a positive and make yourself some extra cash and help out people like me who need parts!

this was the car before it got to the body shop. I got a new computer and left my old one at home thus I only could find that one pic I posted online to show someone. I dont live in NJ any more, thats why I'm so far disconnected from whats going on. The insurance co OWNS the car now. I'm taking the rims/tires and swapping with crappy wheels, tires, and taking all the mods out of it and then it goes to the scrap yard. I'd like the battery too but I don't think it's going to happen. I'll try to get it though and swap with a dead one that can be jumped. The body shop will not let me take anything that is not an add-on or not agreed upon by the insurance co. THE GRILLE IS PROBABLY IN THE DUMPSTER ALREADY, I have not seen the car in weeks, I'm sure when the body shop started taking it apart they saw it was a total loss, trashed what they had left, and called it a day. If the grille's still on the car, IT BELONGS TO THE INSURANCE CO.

so many low ballers here wow. i dont want your money, im not parting it out, end of story. i hate shipping, packing, etc, its all a waste of my time

Body shop will only let me uninstall parts that are not a liability to them, IE they will swap out rims/tires for me but I CAN NOT personally jack up the car, work on it there, drive it (It's removed from our insurance plan now) etc because of liability issues if I get hurt, although thats pretty horrendous haha.

My insurance co paid a lot more than this car's worth and I'd rather not send them a stripped shell. They already aren't happy with the accidents on our policy, so why cause more problems? It was a deer, for all you haters, and pic ******. Why does a pic even matter in this thread? it was a simple question if I could take the rims/tires, not whether you could quote me how much it would be to fix and to ooooooh and ahhhhhhhhh at damage.

If you want the car go buy it at an auction

Reason I don't want another Nissan: Luxury repair costs with a non-luxury name.

I had it for 4.5 years and it was reliable but when problems started to develop they were costly as hell to try and tackle. Crankcase started leaking oil, dripping onto my driveway about 2 months after I bought it, quote to fix: $2000.

My family still owns 2 other Maxima's, wheels/tires are going on there. thanks haters for all your input

I find that kind of strange...your complaining about reliability and cost, but when you hop into the BMW/Audi/ Mercedes range just about anything you do will cost you $2,000

I had an BMW Z3 before the maxima and the transmission went out on it twice in a year and cost about $4,000 each time to get it fixed (2003 with only 45k miles)

ive heard too many stories about stuff like that and its what drew me away from buying a BMW, what impresses me though is the only FF vehicle theyve made is the Mini Cooper

Dude, take a chill pill and there is no one hating, We asked for the pics so we can get a better idea of what happened to the car. We all as Maxima owners and enthusiasts tend to worry about our fellow orgers and there rides and wish them the best of luck, On the other hand your sounding like a little girl who got her purse stolen and wants to get in and out of the police station with no questions asked. If there's something the fellow members here want something and they will ask about it. This is a forum that's the nature of the forum. Talking about a Maxima with a buning oil issue is something that all the 3.5 L Maxima's did and believe me if you think that's bad check out the Audi's when they get leaking water pumps they have to tear down the whole engine to get to it and the price is just outraging. BMW's and Mercedes and Audi's and so on there nice cars but the repair bill will be twice the repair bill the Maxima's will be.

Frame rail was bent on right hand side, grille was missing when I got there, sorry, they already threw it out. they told me in order to repair that frame rail damage they'd need to have pulled the motor and by that point it wouldn't be worth it. i had to fight the owner of the body shop to even swap out my rims/tires as he was being fussy and just wanted money from me / my insurance company, not to have to deal w/ a client whose car was totalled so he wouldn't be paid. Anyways, I put 4 completely bald 17" tires on 2000 Maxima wheels and put them on the car, and left it with a dead battery
