My Viper experience

This is a bit long ,, but it IS a long story soo.. grab some popcorn

I decided that i needed a little more securtiy than the factory alarm offered me, which only would go off if someone actually opend the door ,turnk and of course turned on the car. Main reason being that on my block there is a park , a park whre kids tend to gather... and the neighborhood suspects that they are the reason for the occasional car gettting all scratched up.. although almost all cars that have been scrtatched up were black , and a few other dark colors.. mine is wghite but why take a chance /

so i did some research and decided the viper 5901 was my choice
found a place that would install for $500. it was the best price i got so i went iwth it .. along with teh tinting which was $150

These guys were very freindly , they , like all the ohter places who quoted me a price said ,, that the procedure on this particular model (along with some other, aslo due to the push button start) was very time consuming .. one of hte workers had an 09 (mine is a 2010) , said he got it when it first came out and it took them 7 hrs to finsih it,, after he said they've done a few more ,and they have it down to about 5 hrs..
so, they were so nice the boss told one of the workers to give me a ride home,, i gratefully and kindly siaid it was ok that i wasnt that far away , but they insisted ..(glad they did because its a half our walk , and it was in the low 20's that day.. or $20 cab )

so fast forward a few hours and i go to pick up the car ..
tints looked great!! 20 rears and 35 fronts ..
shows me how to use the alarm .. simple enough ..exceept says that after remote starting , i get in the car hit the brake and it will shut off then restart and off i go .. i read here that , that is not the proper way to do it.. he says i can shut off the remote start with the remote but not to do it while standing next to the car with nissan key fob , becasue the car will read 2 keys

ok , so i accept that..
take it home , few hours later i need to go pick up the GF.. so i hit the remote start and hear the car turns on.. few minutes later i hit teh buton again and hear it turn off again .. go out get to the car hit the disarm buttom and i get a Big X .. from that point on notthing works disarm, arm , remote start nothing

that was saturday night .. had to wait till today to bring it back because they are closed sundays and mondays..

bring it in at about 11am.. after an hour ,, he says , that "the brain" is not responding at all .. and that he has to send out for another one , seen this once before and its becuase the customer was messing with it .. he seemed annoyed.. i explained to him that i only used the remote on/off ffeature once and it stopped working all together , then he just said "well i'm going to replace it this time , but you cant go messing with all the buttons.."
in other words , he doesnt believe me.. he's assuming i fudged with it and am now palying dumb so they can fix my F'up

That annoys me of course but i figure , he's fixing it . let me just keep my mouth shut ..

4 hrs later he's done.. i test it , and all seems to work.. hten i remember the reason why i wanted this thing so i arm the alarm and jiggle the handle , push up on the car , rock it a little ,, no alarm!!

so i go back in and ask them why its not going off ,, he says i have to adjust the settings to my liking .. so like a fool , i figured i'll do it at home i just wanted to get out of ther.

i've set it from 0 to its highest sensitivity settin of 15 , and it no amount of pushing on or rocking the car will set it off!!!

i call him , and he says " try tapping on the glass" so now i'm like--->

told him i tried that ,i've tapped on everything ..

then he says , '"well its not really goign to go off like , i think what you want is an extra feature".................... so i'm thingk WTF!?!?! , so i say but it is supposed to have some level of shock sensing ,, thats hwat it says on the box and thats what you told me... at which point he tells me to bring it in first thing in the morning and he'll take a look at it..

I'm assuming the problem here is the shop i chose , not the viper

this is VERY frustrating to say the least..
we shall see what happens tommorrow

anybody else with a 7th gen (or any gen ) have any complications with Viper 5901???

I'm assuming the problem here is the shop i chose , not the viper

Why did you get the alarm in the first place? I never understood the point of that, its not like it can be stolen, its push button...

and the factory alarm seems like it works to me. you can always ad a shock detector to the factory alarm (I think)

That really sucks. I'd definitely put them in category of bad installers. There are a couple of folks in the 7th Gen forum with these types of alarms. You'd probably have some specific experiences to draw from over there.

That sucks, let us all know the place in queens so we dont go there again. I am from NY orginally Jamaica queens to be exact. PM pearlmax96 aka Don he is an installer and seller and if i am not mistaken viper is one of his main products he supports. He is in Jersey.

Also maybe you should of just gotten an add on shock sensor or active alarm wihtout all the dodads of autostart and whatnot but i know about wanting to protecting my ride. good luck and keep us posted

Yeah, that's definitely an installer problem, not an alarm problem. you told him what you wanted beforehand and he didn't install it.

The installers are also supposed to set the sensitivity of all the sensors for you/with you. All the alarms I've had done, they bring me in when they're ready to set them and we work together on getting the settings the way I want them and THEN I sign the bill and they hand over the keys.

If I am not mistaken I think you could add shock sensors and those proximity sensors to the factory alarm and have it go off when your car is rocked or when someone gets too close.

But that was on the 4th gen, and so it would most likely be a lot more complicated for a 7th gen.

Judging from what you said it seems like those installers were just simply baiting you in with some nicely placed lies and then were probably scratching their heads saying "Uh-oh this is a lot tougher than we thought" and winging it then blame you when something goes wrong.

And this is random but on older Honda Civics the keys were supposedly interchangeable and you could use a key from one year Civic to open another year Civic's door. And my friend who had a 99 Accord tried to open a older Civic's doors with his key my school's auto shop and it opened! I am not sure about Maximas but I think that is a huge flaw in security.

yes he responded to my message htat i sent .. i will be calling him within the next couple of days..

so i took it back they fixed it , i supose ..

i thought it would be a little more sensitive to touch ... idk .. i suppose this part is my fault. i suppose i shuold of done more research on what i could add on to the nissan system at the dealer .. so .. i've got a really nice alarm , that doesnt quite do what i thought it would do..

guy tells me what i want is a motion sensor and that , that is an additional add-on .. says it will be very annoying ot me and my neighbors tho because everytime a car with a loud system drives by or a truck it will set it off..

idk ,, but this pearlmax a.k.a Don guy seems to be the goto guy for this sort of thing (based on my reading around the forum) atleast here on this side of the country ,, so i will def be giving him a ring and see what he has to say , and what if anything he can do...

my only regret is not being more patient and doing more reading here on this forum to find a reputable installer.. so now i cheap install is turning out to be not so cheap ... live and learn

as they say , " haste makes waste"

There is no alarm that will stop a kid from vandalizing your vehicle.
The alarm might alert you to it's happening, but not prevent it.

yeah i know,, but it would minimize time spent vandalizing .. my logic is , if my car is targeted , i would like the alarm to go off atleast immedietly after the first inch worth of scratch is put on it.. so yeah ,if it hapens i think the alarm going off would proly stop the "hoodlum" at that point and he/she'd move on... pfftt kids these days .. idk when i was younger we all did dumb things ,, but i just never understood this kind of thing

there was an altima which they really screwed up.. its like they must of sat there for an hour scratching in there life story on the trunk and bumper..

I kinda had a hard time understanding what you wrote but more importantly 500 bucks to install that sounds like a rip over. A guy here in Oceanside Long Island charged me 150 for it (with the bypass).

Those guys don't sound professional after all that money you spent they should of been nice enough to go into detail about the alarm. As for the alarm not working when tapping or tryna open the door, that's weird.....

shop is called gran turismo located on atlantic ave , at about 80 street..

The $500 was for the install AND the system.

you got the install for $150 (on a 7th gen max or the 02?) and how much for viper?

in this area , (ozone park, richmondhill) 600-650 was what most shops wanted for everything including install .. so i went with the guy who said $500... i probably shoulda went with the guys who were in the lower end (600) of the average price for the neigbor hood .. who knew?

oops you're right. I forgot to count in that you got a 7th gen and a push start. Yeah for my 5.5 gen they charged me 150. I brought the system off Amazon for 225. I was told aftermarket alarms were difficult for push start vehicles maybe the dealer could of offer you something with less trouble?

Either way I hope everything resolved for you. It is a good alarm and I've heard lots of good reviews including myself which has worked flawless so far, so maybe the one you had setup was just a defect.

i had the viper 791xv installed about 4 years now in my 4th gen. i added the motion sensor to it at time of install. basically if anyone approaches the car within a few feet it sounds a warning and pages me once i am in range. once they are right by it it will set the alarm off. some ppl might think its annoying but i prefer it that way and i think its a great deterrent.
