Take you palm and place it behind the **** with you fingers pointed to the passenger side and push directly. Ta da!!! It goes right in everytime with no resistance. I can hit the 2-3 hard everytime. I've been shifting like this for over 2 years with no misshift. Wanna hit the 3-4 fast. Invert your hand so that your thumb is pointed down. Wrap you hand around the front of the shifter and pull back. Again no resistance and it goes right in.

Dave
How did you know?
I'm glad I didn't bet $20!
Half of the time I've got my palm on top, and the other half of the
time I hold it "pistol style." Yes, I do miss shifts. I've got to
try your way of shifting.

Thanks,
Vince

cus on the 5-6 it wants to go back the the neutral postion which is right above 4th. to go 5-4 i just pull back straight and it goes into 4th but ot get to 6th i have to push is way over. tighter gates i do have. i have noticed that i learned all the right shifting techniques already because i drive fast, the tranny is notchy and you HAVE to fit everyone right.

wait a sec....why would you NEED to shift into 6th quickly?!?!?! That's roughly 150mph at the top of 5th......you've got to be kidding me.....at 150mph I wouldn't be worried about the speed of my shift....I'd be worried about my life!

every shift is just practice for the next race, you can't slack on any of them ever.

could someone post the link to the thread were DaveB wrote out that tutorial on how to hold the shifter to get perfect shifts??

I read on this one how to do the 1-2 and 3-4, but what about downshifting? Say I'm in 5th on the highway and I want to go into 3rd for more acceleration, how do I do that without accidently hitting 1st??

btw this is on a 240sx 5-spd.

go to 4th first then up to 3rd but your tranny shouldn't let you into 1st at those speeds.

Is pistol-style the best way to shift 1-2?

That sound a helluva lot like reverse. Has reverse been moved in the 6th speed? If not, must be eery shifting from 5 to 6 knowing that reverse is right there. One bad move, and boom! New tranny!

actually, I did that once....sort of at least.....

the second day i had my car, i was going about 70 in 3rd, and was going to shift into 4th, but i had just started driving a stick, so i didn't know about the neutral positions and such......so I try to put it into what i thought was fourth and hear this awful grinding noise.....i was like, hmm.....I think that was reverse.... At that point, I tried again and ended up in 2nd. I realized that by the time i had the clutch about halfway enguaged, so i finally took the hint and got it into 4th.

Lets just say the other person in the car was quite ammused. He claimed to know all about driving sticks.....but made just as much of a fool of himself when he tried to drive the car....

I have had the car for about 2 months now, and no problems yet, despite my initial abuse. I do rev it up to about 6k rpms at least once while I am out driving, but I have not missed any shifts since that once. I stalled twice in a row about 1 months after I had been driving it.

what i do is kinda like pistol style. i grab is with curled part of my fingers, not so much in my palm and sort of pull towards my body and flick it into gear then move my hand around behind the shifter and push up and over the the 2-3.

What problems? And how do u know the car wasn't abused by previous owners? With Maximas and a lot of other cars, it usually isn't the car, its the owner(s) neglect and abuse.
