For a grocery getter, the 1.8T is fine in chipped form, unless you're taking on Maximas at every stop light........My wife and I didn't notice a performance difference with the V6 versus the 1.8T.....However, the new 220hp V6 that's going in there this year or next may change my opinion......

The best test is to simply close the door on a 5th gen and then close the door on a Passat.....you'll cry at the difference in the feel....

I now await flames from other members about me daring to criticize the Max, BLAH BLAH BLAH
I actually got my information from vortex and other boards too.. always problems with Turbo and BOV..

http://www.preludeonline.com/showthr...threadid=40405

also my good friend owns a vr6 and he also is on the vortex forums and he expresses the same sentiments.. maybe your friends are 1.8T owners?

I haven't heard or seen many positive vr6 experiences, and was only referring to the 1.8Ts.....

I am aware of the BOV issues but not necessarily turbo issues. To me, most are the result of zealous owners......

Would this be cut short if I just said: "Maximas are wonderful and are the end-all be-all of vehicles"?

well my friend is a german car lover.. and i always tell him about electrical problems.. and he has been having such.. but i am guessing that would be both 1.8T's and vr6's..

Bill/Sprint, maybe you are both right and all VW's have problems of some kind?

Yeah, good ol' German electrical gremlins....the main reason I have yet to purchase a German vehicle. Their mechanical engineering is second to none, while their electrical engineering needs a trip to Japan.....

From what I've researched, the electrical problems are more prevalent on the VR6/V6 models than on the 1.8Ts, although you would think it wouldn't matter that much.

Wiring harness/ECU stuff must be hella more complicated on the 6 cylinders to justify what I've seen on VW's electrical issues within a model line.....

Jim,

All cars have problems, but the Passat has rapidly improved in that department from the info I've obtained. Their history has given them a relatively bad reputation......

I wouldn't recommend a Passat (98 and up models, 5th and 5.5 gen) to you if I didn't believe it would serve you well.

In a minute, I'll start speaking to Sprint like I'm a newbie just to provide more entertainment.....

whats funny is..

in 1998 my dad wanted to replace his Ford Probe.. because he is bias to Japanese Automakers

I told him to buy a Maxima..

he bought a Ford Taurus..

he has nothing but problems..

now he wants an Audi A4 .. i told him to get a TL-S because the Audi might have electrical problems..

i think he is still going to get the A4

Actually my ex gf had a 2000 Passat.. when she bought the car she had two choices.. the 2k v6 Passat or the 2k Maxima..

she picked the Passat because it looked better than the 5th Gen Maxima..

granted her v6 hads NO ***** whatsoever.. which is not really a issue for Jim.. but i told her the car would have electrical problems.. she had a rental at least twice a month.. the car was constantly going to the dealer for electrical problems..

I don't doubt this.

Having been a previous VW owner ('80 Rabbit Diesel) I know that they are prone to electrical problems although the engines just keep going. I'm not inclined to take a risk with them but don't really think that a test drive would hurt either

Honda CR-V? Should be comparable to the Rav. I just bought the Wifey an used RX300. 2000 year. Sucks becuase no HID but I suppose I could fix that. Up here in Seattle, the price would right at the upper limit of your price range but where you live they might be cheaper. It was one of the few used cars she was willing to buy and I was willing to agree on. The AWD will be nice for those few times it's needed. And we certainly don't need the frame/harshess of a more dedicated 4WD vehicle.

The Subarus would be a nice alternative but the V6 versions tip at 30k new also. But the 2.5 liter engines should be torquey enough and Subaru knows how to build 4wd systems.

Jim if you want an SUV .. don't get a CR-V or a RAV-4.. they are trucks built on Car Frames.. they don't perform like SUV's and you will be greatly disapointed when you need the features of an SUV..

Yeah, the V6 on the Passats and Audi is quite a disappointment......especially when a chipped 1.8T can beat it easily....

Seriously, the only electrical gremlins I hear of on Passats anymore surround the V6 models only.......strange. That would explain why Consumer Reports has the 1.8T's reliability as above average and the 6 cylinder as average to below average......
