VQ35DE Problem.

Okay, im new here so bare with me. I have a 2002 Nissan Altima 3.5, 5-speed. We all know that 3.5's in nissans, and infinitis are all the same. Of course there are different versions like high rev, etc....

But anyway i have the DE. When i bought my car it had 120,XXX miles on it and a blown motor, so i bought a used motor that had 98,XXX miles on it. And every since i had it running, it burned 1 QUART OF OIL A WEEK! i used to drive 48 miles round trip, 6 days a week for 2 years.

The motor doesn't knock, plenty of freaking power, beat a few mustangs, gensis couples, etc..so power is there. Good on gas. But it does cough up blue smoke when i start to slow down while im driving and when i smack her really good she coughs up a good amount of black smoke, not blue.. And it doesnt leak oil. Any advice??

And there is oil in the upper intake manifold....???? i need help lol

Its a VQ35.......it's guaranteed to burn oil. Its a very known issue that seems to affect 9/10 35's

Installing a Catch Can may help with the blow back issue in the UIM

True, but 1 quart a week? That's A LOT! I'm thinking about buying a fully built VQ, and stage 4 heads.

this statement isnt to accurate... older VQ35's yes, nissan seem to fix that issue very well lately. Earlier model VQ35's (early 2000's era) are known to burn oil "eventually"... as you bought it used and unaware of the treatment the motor received from the previous owner(s) its a risk ppl take at times unfortunately.

He didnt say what year the motor came from (likely came from the same body style and possible same year), but its an 02 altima with 3.5...didnt the 3.5 come out in 02? Its also a used motor, so no idea how it was treated by the previous owner.

OP, I misread...thought it said a quart a month. I'll see what I can find through searching around.

I have no idea what kind of car it came from. My dude got it from a salvage yard. It's my first car and i was in 11th grade when i got it so i couldn't tell him "I don't want a salvage yard motor in my car!" i just made the best of what i had lol

thanks for searching around man!

replace the pcv valve and you could install either a catchcan for both pcv hoses or get an air/water/oil separator meant for air tools and install that on the pcv hoses to keep any oil from making it to your intake and burning off.

thats a start for finding the missing oil.

I will let other chime in, is it correct in my thinking that burning oil comes mostly from bad rings on the vq35? and you could determine if it is the said rings by checking your compression in each cylinder. thats would make checking the compression my next step.

Dont add a breather unless you do both banks. Im not sure the set-up of the 35 but for any engine that is not boosted adding a breather, especially on only 1 bank, is a bad idea. Run lean and unmetered air will mess up your idle. Also the home depot catch can is not meant for the pressure of a PCV system and the drain plug on the bottom will simply leak defeating the purpose of it.

i ran the air tool air/oil separator for some years on a car in the past and it worked great. I had to simply unscrew the clear reservoir and pour it back in the camcase every few weeks to a month. as it got about half full(maybe 2-3oz tops. I capped the bottom with a tire valve cap and rtv
