Well I was on my merry way to school today and as I get off the ramp onto the highway I gun it and as with all automatics it has that damn pause then it revvs and i blast off. Needless to say I blew past everyone.

Besides putting it in 1st and letting the revvs get high, overdrive is the only time we can feel somewhat what a 5spd max feels. Instant power when u push the pedal. What exactly is it that makes the delay from when u mash the pedal and the engine actually kicks in ?

And MOST importantly, I am probubly getting a trans-go shift kit soon for CHEEP. Do these shift kits eliminate that delay when we push the pedal ?? That would be FREAKN awesome !

When I'm at a stand still I'll take off the OD and I'll spin the wheels right off the bat. When at speed and the OD is on I'll get a slight lag but not as much as before. At speed and the OD off the lag is negligable.

Yes I know this becuase the revvs get higher as you get faster with OD off, but im talking about flat out flooring it. OD won't get rid of that pause cause your bypassing it.

Oh ok...bottom line...when you mash the pedal there will be just a itty bitty slight lag but not like the forever and ever lag that you're experiencing now.

Sometimes my car has the lag, and sometimes it doesn't. I thought it was an O2 snesor.....

The VB mod eliminates the lag into between upshifts and downshifts. It eliminates the weak point in an auto tranny, the lag into between shifts. It does the same as a shift kit but better, a lot better. It makes shifts faster, prolongs transmission life, allows you to run more power, & shifts firmer. The only draw back is that the transmission runs hotter w. this mod. This is why a tranny cooler is advised.

I'm getting the VB mod done while I'm out to sea for the next couple weeks, and I'm hoping that that's one of the things it eliminates. That'd be a hell of a nice change to not have the f!cking gear-hunting when you need it to get up and go. Tonight I was playing with a t-bird, and romped on it at about 25, but was already slowly accelerating so when the damn thing finally picked a gear, it only shifted into second at 30mph. <3K rpms helped that turbocoupe keep up with me till 70 when I should've killed him from the start. Do they make any kind of tranny control chip to change that?

Like the others have said, even with the VB, you will still have the lag. The car definitely shifts faster and firmer. Maybe I just expect too much because the VB isn't good enough for me. I would do a 5spd if I had the money.

However, there might be a reason why my tranny has been acting a bit odd lately. Don emailed me telling me the VB that I sent back to him had rust in it. It looked like it's been sitting in water from what he told me. So, if the VB had rust, my tranny itself could have it too. Bad news for me if it's true. So, I'm bringing the car in to a transmission shop and let them check it out. Hopefully, a rebuild kit will fix whatever is damaged inside. If a whole new transmission is needed, then I might just go ahead with a 5spd swap.

Financial reason. To drive the credit card debt lower. I should have went with NOS, much cheaper to play with.

Ok so here is what I seem to understand from yalls posts:

This is all with the Trans-Go kit I will be getting)

1)The pause when I floor it will be shortened significantly
2)When flooring it or giving hard gas, my 1-2 shift will be alot harder and more along the lines of a 5spd (of course not as good, but at least similer). and 2-3 shift hopefully as hard.

3)My downshifts will be alot quicker and not delayed (I HATE having to slow down to 3mph just so my auto will shift back into 1st when making a right turn!

Are my assumptions correct ?

Just today I floored it off the line at a stop light. Wheels spun and my CAI roared, , but then at the shift point it was so WEAK! I HATE that weak-@ss stock shifting. Must....have...jolting 5spd like shifts...

Craig, do you know anyone that lives near you with a VB in their car? The best I could think of is to find someone with a VB in their Maxima and ask them to let you test drive it. Action is better than words.

Nope. Barely anyone probubly knows what a VB upgrade or shift kit is. I know no one.

Can you at least tell me this: Stock, our auto's shift instantly, but the shift is softer than whipped cream. Will the shift kit kick you back in your seat and actually throw you into gear rather than gently pat you into it ? I don't know how else to put it, it just shifts like a Pu$$y!

a VB shouldnt eliminate the time it takes to respond when you nail it.. if your car is in 4th and it wants to shift down to 2nd, its not going to do it at the same time you punch it, you have to let it downshift... with a 5 speed you have to manually downshift anyway... if you hav a 5 speed and someone jumps on you, you have to downshift then take off... i dont think you can do that any quicker than an automatic tranny can... now if you know youre going to race thats a different story, you downshift in advance... with an automatic like deezo said you can manually drop down gears so when you punch it you will take right off because youre in the gear you want to be in

You definitely can feel the firmer shifts. It will give you somewhat of a jolt. It won't kick you back in your seat. It's not that rough. Even when you are just cruising, it will still give you a slight jolt when shifting to a higher gear. The shifts are firmer and faster. However, I still notice the lag. Upshifts are pretty good, downshifts however, the lag is stil there.

Btw, I'm talking about the VB you get from Don or Level Ten. A local member in my area has the Transgo shift kit. He took a ride in a 5th gen with Don's VB. He said the shifts in Don's unit were much firmer than the Transgo kit. Overall, the Don's VB is far superior to the Transgo kit. His handle is "sinewave". In another words, the Transgo kit is much cheaper for that reason. You know the saying, "you get what you pay for".

If you plan to do a 5spd swap later on and just want this for the moment, then it might be fine to go with the Transgo kit for now. However, if you plan to keep the automagic as it is, I highly recommend you save up for Don's or Level Ten's VB.

Well the thing is I can get the trans-go for $35 shipped. And I can have it installed by AAMCO under warranty for like $65-115. So I would still be paying about 1/3rd of what I would for Don's. And it's all local so I just take it in and pick the car back up. No shippin'.

I wanna still do the 5spd conversion but i dont. I love cruisin and not having to work the shifter all the time. Plus I slide around alot in my damn '95 (year known for akward positoning) as it is and I need that left planted in the sidewall to keep my @ss from slidin' all around

The thing is I'm afraid after you get the Transgo kit, you might not be satisfy with it. From what I heard about guys with the Transgo kit, after riding/driving a Maxima with Don's VB, it was like, "OMG! My kit couldn't do that". Something like that. However, something is better than nothing. So, go for it.

Does anybody know the actual times gains from Don's kit, the Transgo kit, and the Level 10 kit? Some actual numbers would be helpful. Also, does anybody know the prices of each off the top of their head?

gains? it depends...

some people posted .6 less in the 1/4 mile and others no change for Don's VB

Dons VB is about $450 when you trade in your VB
Transgo is $35-50

A couple of times I had the opportunity to mash the pedal while at speed to see what happens...Moving along at 40mph with O/D on I mash the pedal...I count out loud "One..Two.." as soon as I mash it and then the car starts accelerating like mad when the boost kicks in...the speedo rushes up to 60mph pretty quickly.
How does this compare with those without the VB mod? I've forgotten what it really felt like stock.
